cumulative GPA vs. junior year GPA

question for everyone...how much do colleges weigh your junior year GPA and cumulative GPAs?

for cumulative, I have about a 3.8. (4.0 freshman year, 3.8 soph year)

but for junior year (this year), i screwed up pretty bad because of choosing the wrong and most challenging classes. I got a 3.5 one semester and prolly around a 3.8 in the second semester, so junior year average is a 3.65.

I have got very, very strong extracurriculars/sports and pretty good test scores. (2250 SAT, 35 ACT, 700 and up on SAT IIs)

i am an asian girl, what are my chances of getting into dartmouth or cornell?

I think it's really about cumulative GPA

My grades declined a lot in junior year, but I still got into top schools

Keep in mind the challenging classes you take are EQUALLY as important as your overall GPA

your chances of getting into dartmouth/cornell are excellent, especially Cornell

for my standards a 3.65 with a 35 ACT is pretty good, applying to ivies will always be a hit or miss, no one is ever a gaureenteed in unless if you published a book or are famous

I was wondering this too...but I don't have the downward trend of 4.0 frosh-3.8 soph-3.6 junior (I'll just probably do worse this semester). However, I'm super jealous of your ACT.

colleges look at cum gpa when making decisions, but they do look at your transcript and note the overall trend. improvements in grades thruout hs is always a good sign, but if you got a B here and there junior yr, then that won't be that big of an issue. your chances into cornell or dartmouth is very hard to say, only looking at your stats. keep in mind that this yr, many w/ impressive stats didn't make the cut, so nothing is guaranteed. although 35 ACT is as good as it gets, top colleges won't care much as long as your ACT is around 32 or higher. beyond that, it is all about your essays, ecs, transcript, recs, unique accomplishments, leadership qualities, etc...

If your GPA had fallen greatly like to a 3.0 during junior year but somehow u amanged to keep a 3.6+, then that would be grounds for quick rejection while a 3.0 freshman year with a 4.0 onwards would be better as almost all colleges disregard freshman year grades as usually being "not as real" courses since they are so early.

In your case, don't worry. Your GPA is still all in the A range for all your years so you'll be great.

Heed what has been said here and work to improve, everything one way or the other counts, when compared to others.
