heard back from Baruch april 1( april fools, lol). rejected from Hunter a little after that (my dream school !!). I got accepted to baruch and will be going there
Hey guys, I got in Baruch… I have 57 credits and my GPA is 3.61. I listed finance as my major, but I know that I’m missing Calculus as prerequisite for Zicklin school. I’m concerned if I’m gonna be able to take any other courses in Fall semester? I’ll have more then 60 credits after this semester, and I’m done with all GED courses at Nassau Community College. Thank you in advance.
I had the same worries when I transferred to Baruch, especially since I did not plan for it initially and did not tailor my curriculum to theirs, but it all worked out. Study your degree map and make a list of classes you need to graduate, then check their prerequisites. If you’re on your last pre-Zicklin class, you can get a special permission to register for a couple of Zicklin classes (if you have not taken equivalents yet). Acc2203 (a BBA requirement) does not require Zicklin admission. Since Baruch is a liberal arts school, you have to pick a liberal arts minor (pick one for which you’ve taken the introductory course already) and you can enroll in those courses. You can also register for your college option (comparative literature) as long as you took the two Eng comp pre-reqs (you need it to graduate). If you have credits left after your major/minor requirements, you can pick a second liberal arts or a business minor (a lot of them are Zicklin only classes, but some CIS and STA courses do not require permission if you have taken pre-requisites). If you declare an economics minor (can always be changed later), you can take intermediate classes as your finance electives (but I do not advise to take them before calculus because upper econ classes use a lot of MVC).
Basically, do your research, make a degree map, and ask the advisors for help during the orientation. You’ll probably find yourself eligible for a lot of courses. Do not get nervous if a lot of sections are full - Baruch always lets people in off waiting lists and they often open additional sections late. It’s a great school, you’ll love it, especially if you like math and analytics.
Also, if calc is your last pre-business course, why not take it in the summer and be done with it? Start Zicklin in the fall with no restrictions.
Thank you so much, this helps a lot… I can’t just take calculus, I have to do pre-calculus first or to take Math test and hope to do well enough to be able to get into Calculus which is gonna be hard, because most of people that I know got placed in Pre-calculus or Trigonometry and Algebra. Anyway my biggest concern was that they not gonna let me take any courses until I finish Calculus, thank you again.
Wait, you didn’t take any math classes at your current school? How did you do your associates without math credit? At Baruch, credit overrides placement, so even if they make you take the placement test, your placement will be determined by the credits granted for your previous coursework. For example, if your transfer credit report states MTH20XX, you can take calculus, and MTH10XX puts you into pre-cal. Being placed into pre-calc is not the end of the world if you are naturally good at math, just take it in the summer, but if you have to start from “immersion” (remedial) or 1000-level math, you will be delayed for sure, and the advisors at Baruch will suggest rethinking your major.
I took only statistics at NCC , and I also transferred 3 credits Math course from my previous college overseas… So I guess that was enough to satisfy math credits that are required in an order to graduate from NCC.
Oof, that complicates things. According to the school’s site (https://www.baruch.cuny.edu/math/student/faq/):
Q: " I took mathematics courses at a foreign university, where do I go to get my math courses evaluated?"
A: “You need to see either Professor Friedland, Gregory or Ridenour. You must bring along an official description of the courses you took (not one translated by you) as well as an official transcript indicating that you completed these courses.”
What will probably happen is that they will send you over to the math dept during your orientation to have them make a decision about your placement. If I were you, I would talk to the transfer services and ask if this could be done as quickly as possible so you can plan your degree. Getting people on the phone at Baruch is not easy, you need to be a bit persistent and sometimes go in person (it is a large school, so the staff gets overwhelmed), but they will help you if you ask. Considering how important the math placement is, try to get it resolved now, before the summer term starts. Prep hard for the CAT in case they use it to place you after all. If you took math outside of the United States, you might actually have an advantage because the public school system in the US is horrific math-wise and foreign students tend to perform much better. Good luck!
I know its been a while but any updates? I applied as a transfer months ago and still no decision from any of my choices.
@coachmatt Have you gotten any decision yet? I actually haven’t.
Hey guys, I am now a transfer student headed to Hunter College. Most of the classes I took in my former college (also a CUNY) were pre-reqs/ core requirements, and on CUNYfirst it shows that all the classes/credits I took at my prior college are able to be transferred, showing me the “transfer equivalent course” for ALL the classes I took. However, my spring semester credits haven’t updated yet. Does anyone know when it’ll update/ how long the process takes?
