CUNY Lehman Macaulay Honors College

Hey Everyone,

I'm very interested in the CUNY Lehman Macaulay Honors College.

I was hoping that I could get an idea of what stats could basically guarantee me admission into the Macaulay Honors College of CUNY Lehman. I would be applying early decision.

Although I am only a sophomore in high school, I have done a lot of research and know that this is my first choice school. I am planning on majoring in Speech and Language Pathology (which is limiting for choosing schools), and I want to stay somewhat near home. I live in NJ (I don't know if this would be a factor for my chances of getting into MHC Lehman).

Anyways, I am hoping to end up with an overall weighted GPA of 4.0. I have good extra curricular, a lot of volunteer hours, and I am hoping to be leading the club Project Interact next year. I also have had a summer job since I was in 7th grade, and I am hoping to be doing an internship at a local hospital this summer.

I believe I should get at least a 1250 on the SAT (critical reading and math).

First of all, is this enough to get into MHC Lehman? If not, what needs to improve? Also, if it’s probably enough, what should I increase to almost guarantee admission when applying early decision?

Thank you!

Also, any information having to do with CUNY Lehman's Macaulay Honors Program would be appreciated.

hmmm I was interested in this but I heard that CUNYs are just commuter schools, and that really doesnt appeal to me
does anyone know if this is true?

Lehman is a commuter school. If you are going to apply to CUNY honors college I would suggest you pick a different CUNY campus. Lehman , honors or not, does not really have a good reputation here in the city.

There are actually a bunch of reasons why I am most interested in Lehman.

One reason is that it offers my major (Speech and Language Pathology).

Second, Lehman is close enough so that if I do choose to commute I can. While the others with no dorms are not close enough for me to commute (Brooklyn, Queens, etc).

Plus, when I went to a college fair I was told that if I attend Lehman, I will get a free apartment in Riverdale (which is a nice neighborhood). Unlike where Lehman is located, Riverdale is not very dangerous.

So although as a whole Lehman is a commuter school, I would be living with the Honors kids. Supposedly most decide to take the free apartment, so it's not as if I would be one of the few.

Also, I do realize that Lehman is one of the easier Macaulay Honors Colleges to get into. The Macaualy Honors Colleges are very selective as a whole (Lehman is still selective, but less selective than the rest). MHC is the best option for me. I have heard good things about MHC (Lehman included), it has my major, also I would get a debt free education. If I could apply to multiple CUNYS for the MHC I would. But since I can only apply to one I do not want to apply to one that is unrealistic for me. This is why Lehman interests me so much.

So if someone could let me know my chances of getting into Lehman, what I can do to increase them, etc, I would appreciate it.

Also any information that you've heard about the Macaulay Honors College at Lehman (please elaborate) would be appreciated.

Thanks!

are there any CUNY's that are not commuter schools?

they are all "commuter" schools. City College and Hunter have dorms but still remain "commuter schools" considering most students still commute.

As I said previously I do realize that there are no dorms at Lehman, but the Macaulay Honors students get a free apartment in Riverdale. So I would be living with the MHC students (which makes the commuting situation okay for me).

Can someone please give me an idea on my chances of getting in, and how to increase my chances? Also any info regarding the Macaulay Honors college at Lehman would be appreciated. Thanks!

bump.

Please, can someone answer some of these questions? All information is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance :)

Hello Mary,

I actually graduated from the Macaulay Honors college at Lehman and I think that it was absolutely the right choice for me. It is not easy to graduate well from Lehman, you do have to put in a lot of work, especially in the honors program, but it is fun. I too live outside of the city and so you living in NJ should not be a problem. In addition, Lehman is working on getting its own dorms for the fall semester, and even still (at least while I was there) the honors college has their own dorms in Riverdale. I would definitely encourage you to apply; I’m very happy that I went there. I don’t know what to tell you that you could do to increase your chances, but from what you’ve mentioned about yourself it seems like you have a lot going for you! Oh and definitely of the CUNy schools I would say that Lehman is the best for the Honors college. The students who generally get into Lehman’s program are friendly and not really super competitive with each other, so it is nice and relaxed; unlike other schools like … HUNTER… lol Also, I have heard that the speech department is very good! plus the campus is nice!

actually, brooklyn has dorms, and so does queens.

^^^

The cost of living in such dorms are not covered by the MHC- and the price is pretty darn hefty.

Unfortunately, Lehman does not-and probably never will in the near future-have dorms.

Students in the Honors College at Lehman are able to forfeit their stipend check in exchange for living in the dorms.

I thought Lehman HONORS was getting dorms. CUNY is reaching out to its grads from the pre-70s (50-60 year olds). All CuNYs will give honors students first crack at dorms. Yes, most of your non-honors collegues will live at home – but like ohters said, they will want ot be feiendly.

Well a 1250 sat probably wont cut it for even Lehman (especially since your oos). At hunter where I’m going the average sat last yr was a 1410/1600 and it was probably higher this yr.

If the other parts of your application are strong enough, a 1250 should not be the end of the world.

not true, a 1250 is too low in the sat department

try at least 1350.

Just make sure that you right a good essay and have diverse interests.

when you guys say a 1350 for SAT…is that on a 2400 scale?
