CUNY?

I’m looking at schools like NYU, GWU, AU, etc. I’m wondering if CUNY is a good school to consider - I do love NYC!

I believe CUNY’s are big commuter schools. i don’t think you’ll get much of a campus vibe, and living expenses will be very high.

CUNY schools have a wide range of different majors to study; the schools also are in very convenient locations for you to enjoy the school you are going to. With different food places, places to stay, hangout spots, etc being right around the corner!

There are all sorts of CUNYs – including an Honors Program that you may want to look into. Different campuses offer different vibes in terms of on-campus living or commuting.

It’s a university SYSTEM and so there are many choices (sort of like the U of California SYSTEM of schools – different levels, different philosophies, different types of campuses, etc.)

Here is info about the Macaulay Honors College – which attracts Ivy-level-stat kids – deadline is in December in years past so be prepared to apply early – https://macaulay.cuny.edu/about-macaulay/macaulay-at-cuny/

  • At least if you’re instate, the MHonors program offers free tuition plus housing and stipend, if I’m not mistaken.
  • Hunter has great social sciences, a post-bac program for premed (so I'm guessing that its undergrad premed is okay too); has an urban campus like NYUs and also offers arts programs as it's fairly close to the Met and museum mile.
  • City College is uptown, has engineering and a gothic-style campus, small but has lawns. It's located near the north end of the new Columbia University campus (at 137th street and the new CU campus is at about 132 street).
  • Queens College is known for its music school among other things. It's set further out from Manhattan and has a more traditionally structured campus -- the Aaron Copland school of music
  • Brooklyn College -- is known for its medical school program; also it has great writing program; and music program. The campus is enclosed and has grassy lawn. Traditional brick architecture. Bernie Sanders went here before transferring to U Chicago. In recent years associates of the school have been awarded Pulitzers for history and fiction, and other awards.
  • Baruch -- a great school for business -- right in the heart of Wall Street. also has some departments that might surprise, like music.

There’s a lot more to be discovered. This link will help you explore which campus seems best for you. It’s very reasonably priced school even if you’re OOS.

Thank you! Had no idea about the system thing so I appreciate the help, will check it out!
