Curiosity of a high school sophomore

Hi, I’ve been looking at Princeton since I was a little kid and have dreams of one day attending. I just wanted to know what AP courses would be smart to take because currently my Junior year I will be taking AP US, AP Spanish, and AP English. I also have the ability to take AP Chemistry instead of AP Spanish. I would like to major in Civil Engineering and minor in Business and Music. I currently also have a weighted GPA of a 3.5. I see that this is rather low but I’m hoping to pull it up this coming year with all my classes as well as taking Honors Band, An Honors Engineering course and Honors Biology. I will be also taking the ACT and the SAT. What kind of score should I be aiming for? Any ideas of what I could do better would be amazing. Thank you.

If your goal is Princeton, then you should re-calibrate. It has one of the lowest admit rates extant. And students with weighted GPAs of 3.5 are simply not viable – even if you get near perfect ACT or SATs. What you need to do is to ply your achievements into a broad list of “match” schools. By all means, throw in a Princeton or Yale or Pomona application as a “dream” school. But your energies need to be focused on your “matches” and a few “safeties” (all of which you’ve got to be able to afford).

If you want to do engineering, then I suggest you take AP Chemistry – only b/c you want to know your ability to handle advanced science courses now rather than later.

Thank you for your reply. @T26E4

Bad News: Unless you are an Olympic athlete, accomplished Hollywood actor, poor refugee from a war torn nation, minority orphan from a crime ridden inner city neighborhood, weighted 3.5 (even if you raised it to 4) is not going to get you in Princeton.

Good News: You can work hard and get accepted into decent colleges and may be go to Princeton for a graduate degree, if you really love it.

Thank you for your reply it means a lot to gain feedback. @WorryHurry411
