CURRENT BROWN STUDENTS: experiences!

All of those who are currently attending Brown, please share with us your experience at Brown thus far!!
Tell us about the academics (my interest is in science in particular), Social life, the people, and everything else! Thanks!

Use the search function. This question has been asked and answered many, many times.

Yes please on the search function. Alternatively, PM those of us who have identified ourselves as current students.

Ditto that you should use the search function. Or ask much more specific questions. “Tell us about the academics” is incredibly vague and broad.

to the OP,

I’m sorry you got hit with 3 unwelcoming replies. If you want to ask something, you should be able to ask it.

The board has a few people who feel like it’s their job to constantly insist that the search function is the best way to go. What they fail to realize is that this should be organic, fluid communication vehicle. There might be a Brown student who happens to read your post and could provide some very valuable, current information.

I wish they’d lighten up.

The people who will direct you to the search function are the same people who have committed time to this forum by answering and re-answering the same questions. If you’ve only posted 18 times (^such as above^) perhaps it would be harder to understand why someone would not just answer the question.

Threads like these are akin to going to car forum and posting “tell me about auto mechanics…in general” when there are years of information and threads specifically identifying many aspects of auto mechanics that have not changed over time. People are usually just too lazy to do research and want to be spoon fed.

If there is a topic that hasn’t been covered before, can’t be found, or is outdated, simply state the issue and someone will most likely help. Otherwise this forum is only a cycle of the same questions year after year. Depending on the month (application season, recent admits, etc.) there are a few questions people have on an annual basis. The answers rarely change.

I agree with Wolfman!

I am MORE than happy to answer specific questions… but I have over a year of time here and thus have 525,600 experiences to talk about.

Sorry if my question was general and repetitive and yes I could use the search function but I wanted a updated experience page-not from 2 years ago. Thank you kmaurak.

Guys if you can answer than answer, but please don’t bash. It was a genuine question, but I’ll use the search function.

Thanks for your responses though! :)

This board has been lacking recently, as a whole, with posts I want to respond to. Seriously any SPECIFIC question, that isn’t a “CHANCE ME!” question, typically gets pretty good responses, and sometimes even a little debate back and forth. That’s what the vets on here enjoy doing, and that’s how you’ll attract attention the best: we may point you to an old thread, but we’ll likely also respond with updates. But like research topics, vague questions are impossible to answer, whereas specific ones can be delved into and deeply explored.

I was going to ask the same question. I’m glad I didn’t, I guess. Hopefully the majority of Brown students are more welcoming… I also was hoping to hear some more recent opinions of the university.

I’ll just go use the search function.

I’m going to have to get into the boat of the other posters…I enjoy helping out however I can, but it’s extremely hard to come up with an answer to a question like this unless it’s made more directed. Unfortunately, I can’t devote the time needed to answer incredibly general questions while classes are ongoing.

In 2.5 years, I’ve had many experiences at Brown. Some good, some bad, but definitely impossible to enumerate all of them and difficult to choose a representative selection. I’ll see what I can come up with, but this is a difficult portion of the semester, so I can’t promise anything without more specific questions.

My own view, if anyone cares, is that (a) the posts telling people to use the search function are merited and serve a valuable function, but (b) they could usually be worded a little more politely without a lot of effort.

I will admit that it is borderline-frustrating when people come here and ask extremely generic questions – though it’s worse when that happens at an interview :-)
