Current Clemson Student- Any Questions?

It seems to me that Clemson has a reputation much like other state schools, in that there are multiple and varying opinions. I'll address your questions from an honors and non-honors point of view. I'll consider honors students to be all of those receiving substantial money from the school, although they are not always complements.

Honors students typically choose to go here for two reasons- scholarships and atmosphere. We are hard working students who choose not to go to more prestigious universities. The way you look at it, this can make Clemson either a safety or first chose. We are all proud to be hear, and my friends in honors are the most spirited people I know. The honors students get to take smaller classes with distinguished professors (for example, my Sociology 201 teacher is only teaching graduate classes next semester).

Non-honors students typically come for the academics and spirit. Clemson does have a very good academic reputation, and many students are very happen to have gotten in here. Being a larger school, I'm sure there are people who don't want to be here, but I haven't met any of them yet.

Everyone I have met here is happy to be here. Whether they came to be an honors student and make all A's or just try to pass all of their classes, most of the students are proud to be here. I have numerous friends at University of Kentucky, and the academics here are substantially better IMO. As far as reputation, Clemson has been moving up in the rankings for several years.

^^^Thanks, much appreciated.

Mitch from some of your other posts I assume you are in the College of Business and Behavioral Sciences, correct? If so, I'd like to get your general impressions. Specifically, D is considering Econ. Thanks.

I am in the CBBS majoring in econ. So far, my impression of the school has been excellent. My adviser is very nice and helpful, and the classes are (generally) small (20-35). The Wall Street Journal is available every day to students of the college. The teachers are good. My current econ major class is intermediate microeconomics, and it is a difficult weeder class. However, it is fair and the teacher does well. Do you have any specific questions?

Sure. At Clemson, what's the difference between the B.A and B.S. Econ degree? What track do most students in the department follow? Thanks

The main difference is that the BA in econ students are required to take a foreign language, while the BS students aren't. There are some other minor differences and these can been seen in the course catalog.

Thanks Mitch

I just got done seeing my adviser (the pre-business people are great), and I believe the BS degree also has more electives. It has 22 in all, and luckily for me that is the exact amount of AP credit I have left over after fulfilling requirements. If your son/daughter has a lot of AP credits that may be something to consider.

I'm really thinking about going next year as a freshman, but I'm from Connecticut and would not no anyone. I was just wondering how you've me most of your friends on campus? And do most of the underclassmen stay at clemson, or do a lot transfer over the years?

Hi. I just visited today and loved the campus, although I've been there a ton of times for sporting events and such. I wanted to get your opinion on the dorms. I have stayed in Bryan Hall if I'm not mistaken and I can't lie they weren't the best. I have looked online and noticed that some of the upper classmen dorms look really nice. How do you feel the dorms are at Clemson. Do the communal facilities bother people and are they easy to get used to?

I've met friends in many different ways. I met some at orientation (stay the night if you can), in classes, at sports games, through friends, parties, etc. Everyone here is very friendly. I am a little on the shy side when it comes to meeting new people, and I was able to accumulate a good group of friends pretty quickly. From my experience, I don't believe a lot of people transfer out. I believe the freshman retention rate is in the US News and World Report.

After visiting a lot of colleges, I would say that Clemson is as good, or better than most of the dorms I have seen. The option to loft the beds is great, and it really makes the rooms bigger- I would do it if you can. Although I don't have a communal bathroom (I live in Calhoun Courts), I have used them and there is no problem. I assume Byrnes is like Lever, and those bathrooms are really nice. The shoebox's are a little worse, but they are easily usable. Do you have any specific questions.

Mitch_L.... my D has been accepted at Clemson and was considering Calhoun Courts (cultural exchange community). We are from SC but have lived overseas for many years which is why this may interest her. Would you recommend Calhoun Courts for an incoming freshman? Distance to class, making friends, etc...? I am a Clemson alumni and remember that it was a little out of the way. Thanks...

I would think that the Cultural Exchange Program would offer a much different experience than I have had, since it is designed to facilitate interaction among the students. Personally, I speak occasionally with some of the students next to us, but I haven't had much interaction with other Calhoun Courts members. The distance to class, basketball games, etc really isn't that far. It is nice to have a bathroom, kitchen, and living room. My experience has lead me to believe that dorms are a much better place to meet people, while the Courts are a better place to live. I'm not sure how that program will factor into meeting people though.

I don't think that a Freshman could get into Calhoun Courts. Maybe I'm wrong but, I think the website states this.

To Mitch: What do you think the chances are of an incoming Freshman to get into a suite style dorm?

Thanks.

The chances are very unlikely. Housing had a problem with placing people this year, and that is why I live in Calhoun Courts. I received a letter stating that the university didn't have a housing assignment for me yet the day others received their room assignment. A week later I was notified of my assignment to Calhoun Courts. Overall, it is very unlikely.

one more question.. how would you describe the weather down there (im not from the south) thanks

Very mild. For example, today it was 70 and sunny. During the first few weeks of school it can get pretty hot (high 80's-90's), but otherwise the whether is wonderful. It doesn't get too cold during the winter, and we only had one snow this year.

I spoke with my son yesterday & he was on his way to class wearing shorts, flip-flops & a tank top. He just wanted to rub it in, cause here in NY it was just barely 50 degrees & rainy.

What do you know about the "Clemson Business Experience?" Also, how/where do you sign up for it? Thanks.

contact the business department...the academic advising center is a good place to start, and I believe they actually run the program!
