Current Cornell Student: Ask Me Anything!

Tell me about College of HumanEcology. My daughter lokes social sciences and human development. Do those students in Human Ecology take classes separate to the rest of Cornell? Is it considered easier to get in? Is it a less pressure environment? Can one take a few electives outside their major? How are freshman dorms? Is it true that graduates of Human Ecology generally head to law school? Thanks and good luck with finals.

@silverpurple I can’t really give you an insight on Human Ecology major, but if there are openings and drops for electives outside your major, yes you can enroll in them. Some need permission but if not filled up by the upper class and a course is available, you have a chance to add/drop later on. I lucked out with freshman dorms, receiving my first choice, a single in Dickson. This is a very social dorm, but not a party dorm. I enjoy North campus and staying there next year, but might move to West junior year. North has gyms, pool, RPCC, bowling etc Food and variety is rated top notch, which I agree with. For a huge campus, somehow we all manage to find a way to find our peeps. Cornell tries hard to promote a balance of work hard & play hard. Cheers!

@silverpurple Hi! I’m in HumEc (Policy Analysis and Management major). To answer some of your questions:

Pre-requisite courses are really the only thing that bar a Cornell student from taking a course. So, no, HumEc students don’t really take classes separate to the rest of Cornell. There are definitely some courses that are dominated by HumEc students because it’s a required course for their major, but you’ll still always find one or two people from different majors in those courses (pursuing a minor, taking it for fun, etc.). That’s the same for the other schools in Cornell, too.

The acceptance rate has empirically been higher for HumEc, so it’s considered one of the less selective schools; however, each school at Cornell is considered to be pretty high-stress. There is a lot of pressure for all Cornell students. I don’t think any specific program is exempt from that. Also, yes, you definitely can take electives outside their major. You’re encouraged to, and it’s a requirement to take classes outside of your school/major anyway.

There are quite a few PAM majors on the pre-law track (myself included), but I wouldn’t say that most graduates of the school as a whole head to law school. There are also a lot of pre-med students in HumEc because of the Human Development and Human Biology, Health and Society majors.

I love HumEc, and I definitely recommend it if your daughter is passionate about the social sciences and human development! There are some awesome programs within the school, and they’re all very unique.

Thanks pedagogy. What have been your favorite classes in Human ecology? How would you rate the professors?

Hey! I just got in and have been researching like crazy. Do you know anything about the Breakfree Dance Crew? I am very interested in auditioning as I really like dancing, but I just don’t have a whole lot of experience. Is it competitive? And is it extremely time consuming? I would be attending the engineering school.

@charykit1 --The group appears to have an active FB page. Have you tried reaching out via their page to inquire about the group? Congrats on your acceptance.

@CT1417 Thank you! I did check the FB page, but it didn’t really help say anything about requirements to audition. I’m not sure how competitive of a group it is. I know it is probably the least of my worries with all the college stuff haha but I was just curious
