Current Courses Section

I thought I had everything in this section figured out, but as my dad was reviewing my application he recommended I change the format of it.

I currently have all of my year-long courses just listed in the 1st column of this section (it's titled Full Year/First Semester/First Trimester, so I thought that's what I should do). For instance, I have "AP European History 1 credit" just in the first column. Any courses that are just a semester long, I use two different columns ("AP US Government .5 credit" in column #1 and "AP Comparative Government .5 credit" in column #2). Is this the correct format? My dad said from looking at it that it seems like I'm only taking my year-long courses for the first semester because I have nothing listed in the second column. Should I list year-long courses in both the first and second columns?

Thanks for you help!

I think that’s fine. I did the same thing. It might be clearer if you line up the two halves of each two-semester course in the same row (different columns).

Either way is fine. If your high school includes senior courses on your transcript (some don’t, which is why this question is on the app), then colleges might use information in this section to get a sense of your senior course load before the transcript arrives. If your courses are not on the transcript, then colleges will rely on the information provide by your counselor on the School Report.

All self-reported academic information is just that: self-reported. Your colleges will always rely on official documentation. In other words: just do your best.

I posed the same question a few days ago. We ended up putting year-long courses only in the first column because that column states Full Year, and wrote in “full year” next to those. So, there are 2 full year courses and 4 semester courses. It does look odd. I have a feeling they will probably see some variations since the instructions are unclear.

we ended up repeating it in the 2nd column and put the credits in parentheses because they are taking that class 2nd semester. Our fy courses are 5 credits and 1/2 year are 2.5 so that is clear. Our transcripts do put senior year courses on just the way they are listed. I think it would have looked too odd to have blanks so even though it said fy in the 1st column we repeated it. The common app is awful - extremely inconsistent and unclear. It is amazing the kids even get into college with such a bad application.
