I am a High School senior in California and I am looking to go into a voice performance major. I have visited many schools and have been disappointed in finding that most schools only have a classical vocal department. I am aware of vocal jazz performance degrees, but would rather study in a contemporary music field. I am also planning on minoring in creative writing and am looking for a school that can support both fields! I'd love some help as I have been searching for a while and can't find much.

Thanks!

This has been covered extensively here. For California look at the obvious contender–USC, they have one of the best contemporary music programs in the country. But also know that contemporary music education at the university level is a relatively young field.

My son is majoring in contemporary Voice Performance at the University of Colorado-Denver. They have two tracks for vocalists, performance and singer/songwriter. They also offer a major in Creative Writing. Definitely check out their programs.

Berklee, Belmont?

Also, look at schools like Bennington, Sarah Lawrence-?

New England Conservatory’s Contemporary Improvisation department.

Also keep in mind that at NEC if you are a Jazz major or classical major you can take classes and be in ensembles in another department such as CI

The Frost School of Music at U Miami has a contemporary singer/songwriter program
