Hey everybody! So excited to have been accepted to MHC today with a global perspective award of $10k per annum.
Unfortunately, I am in need of more aid than that. Is there a procedure to do so? Can I ask them? Will they take my admission back if I don’t qualify for more?
Please explain!

@intstudent2021 contact the financial aid office and appeal your fin aid package. they won’t rescind your acceptance and there’s no downside to appealing. good luck!

Hi! I was accepted ED1, I hope I’m not too late to ask anything. I was just wondering what the “mattresses” were like at Mount Holyoke. I didn’t know if I should buy a topper or eggshell like thing

They could be worse, but they aren’t great. I would definitely recommend a topper if you can afford one. They are also standard twin, not twin XL, so be sure to buy normal sheets.

Oof. Standard twin beds are short.

If I had to guess I think it’s because demographics show that the population of a women’s college will generally be shorter than average, and it lets people eke a few more square inches out of the space (and the school doesn’t need to foot the cost of replacements). I feel for the tall students, though! One of the few times it’s good to be short.

Also, I recommend bringing a bottle of WD40 with you to move in day. Some of the beds squeak very loudly.

@intstudent2021 Hey! Here’s a link to the financial appeals process: https://www.mtholyoke.edu/sites/default/files/sfs/docs/Request_Reconsideration_2017-18_020717.pdf
It looks like you’ll have to fill out the form and email/fax it to them along with the necessary documents. Good luck!

@mjstewart1224 YOU WILL NEVER EVER REGRET GETTING A MATTRESS PAD. forreal, my bed at school is softer than my one at home and I never have trouble sleeping, it’s the greatest. It’s worth the extra $50 or so if you can spare it.

additionally I want to note that I appealed my financial aid for more by showing a similar LAC that gave me a half ride and they bumped up my aid. they will listen if you have a good case for sure.

@phoria do you think International Students can do that too?
I mean show another offer for comparison of Aid and all?

I have a question. How does the Nexus program work? Is it sort of a “major” that follows your interests? Does it always involve a stipend for summer work? Does Mount Holyoke help you find summer research or an internship? I’m reading on the website about it and think my D would love a few of those Nexus tracks, but I can’t figure out if it’s a course of study or a summer thing?

Nexuses (Nexi?) are like interdisciplinary minors which involve an internship component as well as classes related to the course of study. Getting a nexus is one of the only ways to do a “three-part degree” - MHC will not award triple majors, double majors and a minor, or a major and two minors, but they will award a double major and a nexus (or a five-college certificate), or a major, a minor, and a nexus (or a five-college certificate)

This is the registrar’s page on academic regulations - it has their policies on AP and IB credit. Figured people might want to know.

@intstudent2021 yes. it’s a barganing thing–they want their yield to be high, show them another offer and ask them for more aid.

I have been admitted for the fall and although I love mhc, I’m curious about the prestige. I know it isn’t the most important factor, but I was wondering how other colleges/grad schools/employers view a mhc degree? Thanks!
