Current Neuro & Physio majors Q&A

Hello all. I'm a transfer applicant to the Neuroscience and Physiology program. I'm looking to touch base with someone currently in the program to ask them some general questions about their experience so far. Anyone available?

What kind of questions do you have? Just ask them here and maybe a Neuroscience and Physiology student could answer.

Yeah ok, right on.

1) Does the major lean more to the neuro or physio side, or equally to both? Is physio really as dull as people suggest on this forum? As someone interested in medicine, it actually sounds pretty damn fascinating to me.

2) Is your research/lab work tedious or fun? Is it computationally heavy or qualitative?

3) How is the rapport among students in the program? Friendly? Competitive? Existent?

4) What’s your favorite and least favorite parts of the program?

5) Knowing what you know now, if you were given the opportunity to go back in time and choose UCSD neuroscience, UCLA neuroscience, or Berkely neurobiology, which would you choose?

6) Are there any important questions that I’m not asking?

Right now, SD neuro is my number 1 choice, so seriously, a huge thanks in advance to anyone willing to help guide me here and hopefully reinforce that decision. Cheers.

BUMP! I am also considering transferring to UCSD in the Fall as a Neuroscience and Physiology major and would like to know about this program.

You can choose whether you want a neuro or physio emphasis

2) Is your research/lab work tedious or fun? Is it computationally heavy or qualitative?
It depends on the person. It is undoubtedly tedious and repetitive. I feel like the “fun” aspect depends on the environment of the lab. At the undergrad level you’re likely not going to be doing anything incredibly serious.

3) How is the rapport among students in the program? Friendly? Competitive? Existent?
People don’t typically interact with each other outside of class unless they form study groups. In terms of midterms, yes, they’re competitive. Essentially all bio majors at UCSD are pre-med so all bio classes by nature are competitive. Also, Mammalian Physiology, if you choose to take it, is known to be notoriously difficult.

4) What’s your favorite and least favorite parts of the program?
I’m not a Physio Neuro major, specifically, so I can’t say.

5) Knowing what you know now, if you were given the opportunity to go back in time and choose UCSD neuroscience, UCLA neuroscience, or Berkely neurobiology, which would you choose?
Don’t know enough about these other programs to say. However, if you come to UCSD I recommend you try to get a position at a good lab. UCSD is top for neuro research.
