Current OSU Students Answer Accepted Students' Questions 2009

Each area of housing has its own stereotype:

North: Study hard
West: Needs their space
South: Fun fun fun!

Obviously, these are BROAD stereotypes. No matter where you go, some kids will party, some kids will study all day, etc. etc.

Since your only stated concern was social life, it sounds like the typical South Campus dorm might be for you. Although let me stress once more that North and West kids also have very active, healthy social lives. :-)

Are you informed of any scholarships you've received in the acceptance letter, or in a separate letter?

I recieved mine in a seperate letter....about 2 weeks after the acceptance letter.

How are the dorms? Most of the information I’ve seen make them all sound really small and cramped. What arrangement gives the most room, double, quad etc. And are the Honors dorms any nicer?

Is there a lot to do in Columbus?

Are there any good parks around?

The dorms are comparable to any other normal school’s dorms. West has the most space. I’d say North has the least space, even though you have your own bathroom. The honors dorms are comparable to non-honors - besides the students who live in them. Facilities are the same generally.

Yes. There is a lot to do even if you never leave the OSU campus once during your four years.

hi, i know i’m going to miss my saltwater reef aquarium painfully. do you know if there is any saltwater anywhere? any study? and how is the food? are there cafeterias in the honor’s dorms? how would a vegetarian like me fare? are the academics challenging

From my recollection, the THEEEEEE promunciation started when OSU changed logo’s while I was at college in the late 80’s in E. Gordon Gee’s first presidential term. Search Ohio State logos on Google.

The logo used to just be the Block O with the buckeye leaf. I remember everyone saying it THEEEEEE as a joke because of the massive amounts of space it took up on the new logo. (Which everyone HATED by the way). It even has astericks between the letters which seems so funny to this day. It really should be T-H-E Ohio State University. Also, it seemed funny because it rhymed with GEEEEEE. I think over time that pronunciation became part of the lexicon. OSU grads my age all look at each other funny to hear it pronounced that way, it’s more of a marketing tool than anything. Clearly, it’s apparently working since you remember it from all the admissions stuff.

Prior to that (i.e. my whole life around OSU grads, it was just OSU or Ohio State). I still don’t say THEEEEEE. Just like I don’t say “The Shoe”, it annoys me when Brent Musberger describes the stadium that way. To me, it’s just The Stadium (that just happens to be shaped like a horseshoe).

Sorry, showing my old fuddy-duddy, carry on youngsters. (I also remember the day when people only did O-H-I-O in the stadium, now you see people doing it everywhere. Haven’t decided on that one yet, being a little bit of a purist. Though I also remember when the wave was new at sporting events…LOL)

Go Bucks!

MamaDrama, I think we’re in the same age range as I remember the same things as you about OSU. I graduated in 1987…

My daughter is strongly considering OSU’s honor’s program, so we are traveling there this weekend so she can stay overnight and meet people. Are the dorms the same as 22 years ago? I am curious about the food … any chance they have organic choices in the cafeterias?

SnowflakeVT,

I was there from 86-91. You picked an awesome weekend to come, it is supposed to be 68 and sunny in NW Ohio so I imagine Columbus will be in the 70’s and beautious. Nothing like Spring on Campus.

I was down there two weeks ago because we were at a horse event at the fairgrounds and I wanted to drive my rising senior around and show her where I used to live on and around campus. We didn’t get out because we had a carful but we did drive everywhere as the gates were open on the heart of main campus. (yes, those traffic gates are still there behind University Hall, etc.) My mom and dad live in Gahanna so we get down to Columbus but usually not near campus.

If you haven’t been to there in awhile, you are in for a shock. We were at the Spring game last year but just parked out by Schottenstein Center and walked across the bridge and really didn’t go to main campus. This time, I actually got to look at stuff and compare then and now.

There’s absolutely no question what they’ve been spending money on over the years…construction projects. The New Union is the standout along High Street, seriously it’s a beast. Almost embarrassingly huge. Compared the our union, it’s going to be like the Taj Mahal. High Street itself is so different, too. In a sad way. There are entire Facebook pages dedicated to missing practically every single establishment that used to line it. The new Architecture School is a work of art as compared to the old 1940’s fallout building. Larkins Gym? Come on, it’s unrecognizable. Again, a work of art. It was like a bigger high school gym went we were there. Driving around campus was familiar yet disorienting, I knew which way to turn by rote, but familiar landmarks are sometimes blocked with new buildings. I felt a little claustrophobic at times. It seems a bit “crowded” to me because of the scale of some of the buildings.

I’d say the biggest changes in dorm appearances from what we remember are in the Medical/South area. There’s a brand new dorm along Neil Ave. that was never there that Dr. Holbrook steerheaded, I guess she was big into the dorm upgrades. There’s apparently a dorm now for post-grads like Med School, dentists, etc.

I lived in Taylor for Honors but I guess there are now two other Honors locations as well (maybe Lincoln is one?). They did a huge upgrade of the Towers around the time I graduated and for a long time after, the Towers were the choice place to live on campus because they were from 8-12 to like 4 people in those huge suites. We haven’t done a formal visit yet but plan to this summer so I don’t know where the “nicest” dorms are but compared to the Motel 6 type environment we lived in, I suspect everything at a minimum is in the Holiday Inn Express range with some Courtyard by Marriott looking places, too, judging by face value. Everything just seems fancier everywhere you go on campus not just the parts seen by the public. Be careful with the air conditioned vs. no air conditioned dorms thing if that’s an issue. I don’t know specifically about organic dishes in the Commons but if the rest of the campus upgrades are an sign of the dining services upgrades, you probably stand a good chance.

We have been to a couple of college fairs recently and from the descriptions of what they do to retain freshman nowadays, I think your daughter will love Honors. They quoted an 85% return to school rate for 2nd years across the board so the Freshmen year is the big push. I heard they roll out the red carpet for Honors. The Living Learning Communities, scheduled advisory forums, on and on and on. I would say there is 500% more handholding of students then there was when we went there when your parents dropped you off, you met with your advisor once a year and everything else you just figured out by trial and error. I never saw our RA unless there was a fire drill, suicide attempt (Taylor Tower drama), or a fight broke out. Frankly it would annoy me how much attention they lavish on kids now, there’s no fear of being just a number I don’t think (at least at as a freshman). My impression is your bigger fear would be not being left alone. (LOL)

I’ll be curious to see what you think after your visit this weekend, I didn’t even get out of the car and I was astonished. I don’t think I could have done the behind the scenes on the same day, it might have been too much for my ticker. Have fun and PM or post when you get back if you have a chance.

Sorry to have hijacked this thread, now back to your regularly scheduled discussion.

Hi Mama Drama,

I’ll PM you when I return to let you know what’s different. I lived on North campus, too, but my daughter’s overnight will be in Siebert on South campus. When my daughter and I stopped by OSU two years ago, the old Union was still there, but it was neglected and sad, and I didn’t realize until afterwards that the reason it was neglected and sad was because of the beast that was coming (the new union, I liked your term). Will let you know what I observe. ; )

There is constant construction on campus, you are right about that…

What will be even more interesting is going to be the dorm renovations in a few years. They just purchased the holiday inn on Lane to convert into a dorm because they are doing a 200 million dollar renovation to mainly the south campus dorms. I must say, I would hate to be a freshman in a few years. Its going to be a little chaotic, I think.

I am ready for the union AND the library to be open already…

I think it’ll be nice to be a freshman in the coming years. You’ll have excellent brand new RPAC, student union, and library. You might have brand new dorms. It’s not like construction on campus is a bother; the campus is so big you don’t even notice it unless you’re right there.

Current OSU people…how can you win an Appeal for OSU if youve been rejected ?

Kelsey, I do agree…I mean, they are going to have a lot of brand new amenities and that will be awesome.

I guess you have to realize that at a university like this, there is always going to be constant construction…BUT, if you are telling me that housing for new kids isn’t going to be an absolute cluster*****…you are fooling yourself. They are buying the holiday inn which only houses 480 kids…and then moving some others to jones and then scattering them otherwise. OSU will get it done, but there are going to be issues, no doubt…in the end, it will be worth it with the renovations…but i’m just saying I wouldn’t want to be caught up in that.

And…to everyone who says OSU is ‘so big’…I don’t agree either. I criss-cross campus everyday and I see people I know every single day. At least one person a day…either from a class we have had or friends from other sources. If you get involved…its really not as big as it seems :)
