Don’t worry, I’m not that easily persuadable. Sure they helped me make up my decision about pledging but I also decided on my own that the risk is too high to join a frat. One of my friends who is going to be a Senior next year is trying to get me to join his frat, but I’ve almost all but made up my mind. Thanks for all the data though!

Is there any specific frat that most asian-americans rush/pledge?

I use to enjoy following these posts but unfortunately there are a few posters that seem to dominate every thread… When my son was thinking about going to Lehigh I was very much against him joining a fraternity. He did not intend to join a fraternity. At the end of freshman year he tagged along with his friend’s rushing and ended up joining a fraternity. I let my son make his own decision. I think college is about trying new things and meeting new people. My son has really enjoyed his fraternity. He has had no problem maintaining a very high GPA with an engineering major and 2 minors and taking on leadership positions in the fraternity. Fraternities at Lehigh are far from just being a “social” organization. His brothers have helped him get fantastic jobs and research positions on campus. A brother has graduated took a lot of time and helped him with his resume. And another brother told him about an amazing internship position with a very prestigious company. My son and his brother both got the internships! President Gast has told me she views the Greek System as a leadership program. The corporate world is looking for employees that have the ability to be a good team member and involvement in a fraternity or sorority is a very strong indicator of that ability. I feel Lehigh is a very welcoming school with many options which are all valued and respected.

I would hope that an essential part of a Lehigh education as well as one from any university would be that a statistical correlation does not necessarily indicate a cause and effect relationship. Even if it were shown that Fraternity and Sorority grades were lower than those of the student body (it has not) this does not indicate it is membership in these organizations that caused the lower grades.

We are actually talking about fraternities (not ALL Greek) which HAVE been shown to have a lower average than do all undergraduate men at Lehigh. All men at Lehigh average a 3.04 whereas all men in fraternities at Lehigh average a 3.00. If you don’t believe me, http://www.lehigh.edu/ofsa/PDFs/Grade%20Report%20Spring%202012.pdf

Anyway, I believe we all know that correlation does not mean causation. However, correlation does mean correlation and that’s too much of a gamble for me to take. Obviously the change can be a statistical anomaly and/or can be because of other factors. In the end, it’s just not something I want.

Thanks for the information, though.

This is off topic but wondering if Lehigh is open tomorrow, Jan 21st, MLK Day. We were thinking of coming to the info session and tour but wanted to come on a day students are around and classies are in session.

Hi Search2014,

I’m a current Lehigh undergrad. Lehigh is definitely open tomorrow for MLK day - we’ve always been open for federal holidays whenever the semester is in session. In fact, for the past few years, the first day of classes has been on Labor Day.

Tomorrow should be a good day to visit - but I think there’s a chance of snow.

Best,

Lehigh2012, no worries for you. I have seen that Lehigh is committed to excellence in all the programs they offer -including the Fraternities and Sororities!!! Lehigh is a very welcoming and exciting place with many choices of activities. If you aren’t busy in a Fraternity I am sure you will end up being just as busy with some other organization!

I just get tired of Greeks being judged by their GPAs. But they don’t accept kids based solely on their GPAs. I think it is great they have to have tutoring and mentoring programs. I like that my son makes time to help his fellow brothers with their studies while fellow brothers have helped him write his resume and find jobs, research positions and summer internships.
