Yes. Most people here have big dreams and want to see them become reality. There are a lot of lazy people at this whole school, but by in large Stern gets its reputation for a reason. Everyone wants to succeed and makes moves to try to get there. It’s cutthroat at times.

Do you think a 3-4 hour battery life laptop is enough for Stern? I know the website recommends a 6 hour battery, but would a 3-4 hour one suffice provided I frequently charge it?

Also, how convenient is it to charge your laptop and where can you do it?

Hellodocks,

First off let me thank you, for all the wealth of knowledge and information you have bestowed upon us hopefuls in this thread. I literally took, two hours and read every last post and question asked and the wealth of information is amazing. I am just looking for a bit of guidance, I am a Incoming Freshman into my local Community College, I’ll give you some background. I am African American I lived in Illinois (that’s where I graduated) but over this summer, I have relocated to North Carolina. In high school I was a complete bum, I won’t overindulge on the details, because its quite embarrassing. I had a 2.99 GPA was president of Future Business Leaders of America for 2 years, Went to National Leadership Competition in Nashville Tennessee last year, placed 16th in my respected field. To be honest thats about it, never took the SAT which I’d like too, only took the ACT(more prominent test in Midwest). So on to Community College for one year which is the plan. I was so ashamed with myself those four years, that I didn’t even apply to one College/University. So to be honest I don’t know where I could of gone if anywhere.

I won’t turn this into a full biography. But I guess my question is. Could you shed some light onto what I need to do this coming year. So that I may perhaps have a shot to study at Stern 2012? It’s probably a long shot. But **** I want it and I’m going to do as much as possible to get to where I wanna be. . . So what’s the absolute best classes, required and elective(?), clubs, societies, leadership roles etc. that I should be looking in to? NYU (Stern) been my dream for 3 years now roughly. As of yesterday it was just a dream, and I am prepared to take the step and work my a** off to make it into a reality.

If you need any additional info (I’m aware I was quite vague, just ask me)

Thanks for reading.

Cheers Mate, & Congratulations on the completion of your first year.

What are the business fraternities like? Are they hard to get into? Can you get into stern scholars program in sophomore year? What are they qualifications?

hi docks.
i just got a mac, and now i have the option to buy either iworks (pages, keynote, numbers) or the microsoft office package (word, pp, excel). i know that big companies primarily use office rite now, and ive been told i may be at a disadvantage if i use iworks for all of college and then have to switch to office for work. if you can, can you shed some light on the situation; should i use office? or will it be easy to transition from iworks to office. im leaning towards iworks now because of the simplicity but i dont want it to create any problems in the future. thanks!

First of all, hellodocks, your thread is AMAZING. Thank you so much for taking out time for answering out questions.

I’m an admitted student for this fall. I was in IB and was predicted a really decent score, 36-37 I think, but my final IB score was beyond disappointing, I got a 31.
Now, I was admitted ED2 into BPE and I’m sort of worried about the adverse effects of a crappy final IB score.

Do you think it’s going to effect my admission in any way?

I mean, I’ve already registered for classes and got my housing assignment and roommate and everything.

Do let me know.

@Ron
I’ve said this a couple of times already, but here goes again.
- GPA. Get it as high as you can. Bite, fight, scratch, kick, do whatever it takes to keep it up.
- Extracurriculars. Demonstrate you’re involved enough, have leadership potential, and are invested in developing yourself as a real team player.
- Recommendations. Develop relationships with faculty to the point that they will have no problem singing your praises in written form whenever you ask.

That’s pretty much your path to success.

@hello
I can’t help with high school questions, sorry.

@rubic
I’ve answered this several times as well, broken down my opinion on DSP, BAP, and AKPsi. Check the thread.

@sonic
OFFICE without a doubt. I did the opposite and regret it so fully. It’s not that it’s more difficult to learn Office later (though that may be a factor), it’s just that you won’t be able to do your homework that requires Excel and Powerpoint without going into the comp lab, and trust me, at 2am on a Tuesday night when you’ve still got a whole week ahead of you but way too much on your plate, being able to do that in your bedroom makes a big difference.

@arwen
You’re welcome for the thread, glad you found it helpful. Nothing will affect your admissions at this point. You’re what, 2 months away from move-in tops? Stop stressing. Focus on doing well in school and enjoying the last bit of real freedom you have in your life.

Haha omg, I’m so relieved!
Now I’m just mentally prepping myself for slogging in college. Don’t wanna let this happen again!

Thank youu :D

Hi I’m wondering about how to pick between recitations (should I just pick whichever one best fits my schedule?). Also for a lot of the lecture classes I cannot see the professor which is teaching. How do I know who teaches that class? Should I pick a class which says the lecture over another?

Thanks

Just wondering also if you’ve heard of Lu, Jianfeng (Math professor who will be teaching Calc1).

hi hellodocks,

thanks for continuing this even through the summer haha

I am wondering how involved typical students are in undergraduate research at Stern? It doesn’t seem very prevalent in a business school, but I’m just curious as to what students think of it

Also, is there any type of final project or thesis for seniors at Stern? I would guess not since there was no mention of any sort of thing on the website, but i just wanted to hear about it first hand

thanks again

@Phwool
You won’t really ever know who your recitation leader is until the first week of class, and if somehow their name magically is listed in Albert, they probably won’t be known enough to be on ratemyprofessors.com. Pick whichever best fills your schedule. If it turns out to be a problem, just go introduce yourself to the prof and work out a way to switch it.

@uncertified
I don’t know of a single kid who has done research here. I’m sure the opportunities exist, matter of fact I even recall coming across a page once that had some postings listed but there was a high GPA requirement and some recommendations needed and no pay.

I don’t think there’s a final project per se, but some of the classes you’ll have senior fall or spring will have big ending projects for sure, PRL definitely will.

Still taking questions.

Does the curriculum take up a lot of classes during freshmen/sophomore year? If so how many core curriculum classes should people take?

Hi,

If I got into Tisch School of Arts with Fine Arts (but not Stern) and I wanted to double major in Fine Arts and Finance or something business related, would I still be able to get a Bachelor’s or take all the business prerequisite classes so that I could apply for business school for graduate school?

Thanks so much,

What is all that you know about the BPE program?

@kabayou
You’ll probably have no classes in Stern your first semester. You’ll be doing the math and English requirements, probably the NatSci and one of Texts & Ideas or Cultures & Contexts. Frosh spring you’ll get into micro, maybe financial accounting, and the other gen-ed reqs. Sophomore year you start to get into the core. Most people take two or three core courses both semesters in sophomore year.

@barnard
You cannot have a major in Stern without being accepted into it. It’s really blunt, unfortunately. You can have the minor called “Business Studies,” but it’s not that strong in my book. You can apply for business school after completing your B.A. though, business schools welcome applications from candidates across all industries. You don’t have to have worked or studied in business before to get an MBA.

@davis
It’s a young program, hasn’t been around too long. It’s got some hard freshman classes. I know a kid in it who hated it and switched out after one semester, another who stuck with it and loves the fact that he’s abroad so much, and another who stuck with it and wishes he’d gotten out when he had time to still complete the requirements for a normal major.

You spend three semesters abroad in total, sophomore year is in London and junior spring (I think) is in Shanghai. You get some special seminars that only BPE kids enroll in, and you have the potential benefit of being able to develop closer relationships with some faculty given the relative intimacy of the program.

Hi, thanks for the responses
I was wondering what the social life at Stern is like. How much free time do you have, what about the parties, and is it hard to find a close circle of friends in such a big school in the middle of the city?

What classes did you take at Florence and did they go to your major/gen ed requirements?

Wow thanks a lot docks, excellent thread.
Just read through all 600 posts, and whew, it was exhausting, but I pretty much had every single question I needed answered. Anyways, just gonna thank you again for taking time out to help all of us w. our questions.

Anyways, NYU is my dream school, I seem to love everything about it and I just feel like I belong there…but getting back to my question----> So over the 600 posts, I’ve seen you mention many times that GPA is much more important than standardized test scores. See what happened is that as a Freshman, I didn’t have my priorities straight, so my GPA was hit…hardcore. Like C’s. and pretty much the rest B’s except for like 1 A lol. (All core classes were honors, but had like 3 electives, and those were regular 4.0 classes) So during sophmore and junior year I tried to raise it, and just got my weighted over 4, and my uw is about a 3.38 or something…

Now I know that’s pretty low, but do you think that NYU would at least understand the reason for the 3.38, and see that I messed up freshman year and give me some leeway for doing better(upward trend and all…)?

I’m applying ED if that helps any, sooo yea…
I understand if you don’t answer this question since it is kinda a personally related question :)
