I am currently a senior at NYU Stern here to answer your questions about NYU, Stern, and all things application wise.

I'm doing this as part of a research project on the pain points that students go through during the application process and how it can be improved, so feel free to ask away.

A little about myself:
- Last semester senior, transferred into Stern after my freshman year elsewhere
- Majors in Finance and Management
-Completed a consulting internship last summer at a top 5 consulting firm
- Very involved in the tech scene
- Lived in the dorms during my sophomore year

Feel free to ask any questions you have whatsoever. I will be answering them every evening, once a day.

What were your GPA and test scores when you applied to NYU

I have a 90.38 three year average(freshman, sophomore & junior years) out of 100 (my school doesn’t do a 4 or 5 point scale), and a 92 first semester average. These are unweighted, and I am taking the most rigorous courses in my school. I have a 30 ACT score with an 8 on writing. What are my chances with an Econ major in CAS, if you happen to know.

1.How is the workload at Stern? 2.Do many Stern kids get internships at wall street firms or others? 3. How would you rate your overall Stern experience. Thank you so much for your answers!! :))

I had a similar average, with 2240 SAT scores. I would hypothesize that if you write a good essay and show your knowledge of the school, you’d have a good shot

Workload at Stern is pretty intense. You will be doing hw for the majority of your weekdays if are trying to do well.

I’d say 40% get internships soph summer, and 80% internships jun summer. Many are with wall street firms as finance is the major of roughly 70% of the students

I would rate my overall Stern experience as positive, however if Finance/Accounting is not your passion you will find yourself as a minority

@Portis405 What were your AP Scores? And whoa, a 2240 SAT! Dang, what do you think is the average SAT for applicants?

Also, less on the objective side, how is the “school spirit” at NYU? Are there a lot of clubs? (Any recommendations of clubs to join?? lol) Are the professors friendly at all?

@Portis405, how was the transfer process? And do you think your freshman year college grades and professor recommendations made a big impact? Did you do any more EC’s or take harder classes in college?

@dullpencil, I think the average SAT is 2000, give or take (subjective)

School spirit is not very strong considering it’s in the middle of a major city. It’s more NYC spirit than NYU imo.

Teacher’s are very friendly, and what clubs to join depends on your interests. Like most large institutions there are clubs for just about everything

@jackz99, An ACT of 30 is not at all below consideration. I’m not sure of the average, but I would say that’s a pretty solid score if you can craft a story around it

@master2018, the transfer process wasn’t too painful. I had very good transfer grades from Northeastern U, and coupled that with solid extracurric’s and a nice rec letter and you’ll have a good shot.

I would work on crafting a story with your transfer app that embodies a single reason as to why you want to transfer…if you have one weak link (ie extracurric’s) I don’t think it’ll kill you

is NYU Stern particularly “cliquey” if that makes any sense? Are the people pretty open to joining other people and what not, or is it kinda closed.

Also, have there been any incidents of “crime” in the area?

This is also just a thing for me, but have you been to/seen other people going into any good comedy clubs in NYC? (Close to campus)

NYU Stern is pretty cliquey. After a few years everyone kind of falls into designated “cliques” based on your set of interests. That being said, I’d classify the general atmosphere as friendly on the outside, but very competitive at heart (as is the case with all top b-schools).

As for crime, it is NYC so there is definitely some crime, however it is very very minimal. NYU has security all over and around campus, so I can assure you that you will always feel safe.

Comedy clubs are all over the place, and many students attend. Personally I don’t have much experience so couldn’t throw out any specific names.

Hi Portis,
Thanks so much for doing this! It certainly helps those of us hoping to attend NYU Stern! From your experience in consulting, does NYU have good representation in internships and jobs in top banks and consulting firms in NYC? Compare it to Cornell, Duke, Dartmouth, Northwestern, and the top schools in the US? Also, did you find your finance degree put you ahead in terms of skill in the workplace over those who took arts, engineering, or economics majors from schools that don’t offer finance, like Harvard, Columbia, Yale, etc? If for some miracle I get accepted into an Ivy League institution that doesn’t offer finance, would you attend that school, or go to NYU Stern for a finance degree? My current career aspirations are that of consulting or investment banking. Thanks!

So Portis (thanks for the answers so far btw),

I’m not sure if I should apply ED1 or ED2, and here’s a couple questions about all of that…
-So ED1 does NOT include 1st semester grades correct? And ED2 DOES include 1st semester grades right? Does ED1 offer a higher admit % rate than ED2?

-So my freshman year was very poor, due to family issues and the fact that I took 1 AP Class, and I ended receiving 2 Ds that year… BUT I took “retook” those classes again and received As in them (also got a 5 on the AP exam for the AP class). Do you think Stern could be sympathetic for this?

-Are NYU Admissions Need-Blind? So will I have a higher chance of getting in if I DO NOT ask for aid?

@portis405 I have two questions. Firstly, looking up previous Stern threads and examining accepted high SAT and ACT scores, I am fearful of my chances to be accepted. My question is are there some students with particularly lower SAT or ACT scores such as 1900’s or do mostly all the stern students have 2100+? In addition, are there certain majors where students have lower SAT scores? Like Marketing?
