My best advice to you is to call admissions and ask to speak to an admissions counselor. My son is a CMU student and we have found the staff to be most helpful throughout the admissions process. In this way you will have the information that you need rather than relying on our opinions. Good luck in your search!!!!
P.S. My son loves CMU!

i live on west coast y businness hours for CMU are from 8:30 to 5:00 P.M
for me 5:30 to 2:00 P.M. And its only Monday-Fridays making it impossible for me to call since I am in school.
how to speak to someone?

i am a prospective student (senior) and i will be applying to the tepper school of business at CMU. However, i am not taking physics, and physics is a requirement (i read it on the CMU website). Will i be disqualified from getting in to CMU?
thks a lot

E-mail is your friend.

wat u talking about?

Aka Email The Friggin Admissions Office.

well maybe no one answers the phones

I don't understand why you're having so much trouble getting through -- when I called the admissions office I got through right away.

I answered your personal message, but just to add to that, calling them is definitely a good idea. I am strongly inclined to guess that they will be sympathetic, especially because of your high grades and class rank, to overlook the physics requirement, although they probably will make you take it when you get here. I did not have several of the required SAT2s and they let that slide. Overall, I'd say that CMU's admissions people, aside from being just really great human beings, are extremely reasonable and understanding. But, yes, definitely do call.

k i called during school, during passing period and yes that will let me slide without physics so yea!

I would like to know what you think about the proffessors. Are they accessible, good teachers and do they care about undergrads? thanks.

Great! Congrats!

For which major? I assume it might depend. For mine (fine arts) they are wonderful. They are extremely "accessible;" generally my classes have between 6 and 16 students. If there are grad student TAs, they might help the students during studios along with the teacher, but they definitely aren't left to teach the class. I usually cant contact my teachers after class aside from e-mail, but then again I've never tried, nor would I want to, or ever even need to for my major.

As a HS senior who's considering applying to CM, I'd like to know how is the social life there? I've read reports from people who have/are attending CM, and the prevalent impression is that it's filled with people who spend all their time in their rooms and never see the sun, and that the workload is so heavy there is no time for anything else. Are these exaggerations, or the truth?

Also, tell me, how's the food? It received a pretty bad ranking for food on a site I found...

First, online rankings are a waste of time. Do not give them any credit.

Secondly, the social scene is what you make of it (as it is at any college you go to). The parties are plentiful, but not so much that it's a bother. When I want to go out and party, I go out and party. When I want to stay in and play pool, ping pong, watch movies or just chat with friends, I can do that too. The classes aren't easy by any means. This is a top 10 engineering school, #1 CS school and ranked highly among the other colleges as well. Do not expect to enter a great school and do minimal work.

With that said, there exists a social scene. There is a place for EVERYONE. Nerdy, artsy, laid back, hippies, anything you want it's here. I was very surprised when I came here because, just like you, I heard that the social scene was horrid but have come to realize that this is far from the truth.

Just so you know, no one would ever say cm it would be cmu though the school do to legel issues uses neither, just "Carnegie Mellon".

of course the social scene is what you make of it but due to the overwelming male ratio and the cold and rainy weather (students do not just hang around outside) it is harder than many other schools. Also, there is a sizable population that does not paticipate in the parties and such (think typical cs major).

If you are in h&ss you will have plenty of time to do stuff but otherwise you will feel pressure. Not extreme pressure most of the time though. I think that many students, and the school, exaggerate the amount of work as they like that image of being 'serious'. My current school is just the oppisite.

The food is overpriced and terrible. Not only is it poor quality but it all is ethnic so that you develop a distaste for their distinctive flavors very quicky.

_42, I'm not sure if things have changed but what you're describing is quite the oppositive of what I'm experiencing.

People are outside everyday! I'm playing frisbee daily. I've been here for a month and it's only rained maybe 4 or 5 days. The rain is refreshing and mudsliding on the cut is a blast.

I agree with you, there are alot of "typical CS majors" but they're not a bother. They are either in their room or at the library, and even then it's useful to have them around for help with your CS classes.

The friends I've made here are like the ones I have back home, laid back and fun. We play pool every night around 12 or 1 AM and play football on "the cut."

The food has been fine so far! From my knowledge, they really made an effort to make it better this year. It's college food, so it isn't cuisine, but I haven't had any problems with it.

Hi, first of all, I would like to thank sots for answering all these questions. I learned quite a bit from this forum. I am a CMU Art AND Design major applicant, and while I am applying to other art schools such as RISD, ACCD, and MICA, CMU is actually one of my top choices because of its interdisciplinary program -- which would let me achiece my goal to be a well rounded student. My question is if you could give me some criticism and advice on some of my potential portfolio pieces. I was thinking of conjuring up some photography, computer generated graphic designs, and maybe some 1-2 additional useful product design projects involving some daily products (backpacks, toothbrushes etc). Do you have any advice?

hey, i heard that a lot of people are dropping out from CS program, just cuz it is too hard or many people arent interested in it. I got into SCS early and I have a quite strong interest in the field, but I do not have as much experience in programming as others probably do. All I did is a summer internship of software development and 3 years of programming at school. However, my teacher at school is not too good at teaching AP Comp Science so I am basically self-studying. Is CS at CMU like this too...like expecting you to know everything without teaching us? If so, then I probably will be one of the drop-outs, so I am worried...
