Current Student...ask Away

It doesn't matter if you have a PC or Mac. Both will connect to the campus wireless network just fine.

you said that both pc and mac both connect...but does your major influence what kind would be better to have? For example I am interested in engineering, so is there any required software that is only for pc? Thanks.

one more question...sorry if you have answered it already i tried to look through but i couldn't read them all:
How many people have car's? What is the parking situation like? I live in SoCal...would i be better of using the amtrak? Thanks in advance.

No, engineering majors typically do design work with special software that's loaded on the workstations in the labs, so your own computer won't be used other than for typing papers.

A lot of people have cars, but freshmen aren't allowed to buy parking permits. The campus is pretty isolated and you can't do much without a car.

So does that mean that as a freshman you can't have a car there, or does it just mean that you have to park far away?

No one's going to stop you from bringing a car. You can always park off campus and ride your bike there.

Is it common for freshmen to bring their own music systems to college? I know I should get an iPod really but I don't like to have earphones in my ears all the time, kinda uncomfortable. I could get a boombox too...but sound quality ain't so great on those. So would it be very unusual if I brought my own speakers & CD player along. Is there space in the rooms?

Thanks

Absolutely. A lot of students bring computers and play music on their speaker systems. Makes the dorms sound really lively.

How safe are the dorms and the campus in general?

I'd say the dorms and the campus are very safe. You should still use good judgement and lock your window and door when not in your room, etc. The only real problem is bikes or even just parts of bikes disappearing. If you always lock your bike that shouldn't be a problem. At the beginning of the year, the bike shop has spray cans of paint so you can make your bike less attractive to anyone who might want to steal the wheels or the whole bike.

I'd say this is one of the safest college campuses because it's surrounded by very high-priced properties, probably a median of $800-900k. The campus is also isolated, so there's very few people around who aren't students. Lots of people walk around at night and leave their dorm rooms unlocked, although obviously crime could come from your fellow students as well.

Crime: Basically zero, except for bike/bike parts theft. You absolutely must lock your bike. And by "lock", I mean lock both the front wheel and the frame to a stationary object. In a pinch, you can get away with just locking the wheel to the frame, but I wouldn't recommend it unless no bike rack is available. You will see wheels without frames or frames without wheels locked to bike racks on a regular basis.

Cars: You don't need one, at least certainly not your freshman year. A bike is more than enough to get around. A car is just extra hassle, in my opinion.

And I'd like to add to one of current_student's earlier answers:
"Do students have to pay to get into sporting events?"
Actually, no, if you're not too choosy about which ones you attend. Join the Band. You then get in free to almost any event that the Band plays at. Plus you get an automatic social life. And if you don't play an instrument, that's fine. Your section leader will give you lessons. Also, if you DO play an instrument, the Band can give you an opportunity to learn a new one (which is what I'm doing). [end shameless plug]

if you definately don't play an instrument (and never have) and don't really see yourself as musically inclined, can you still join the band for fun and try to learn a new instrument? any instruments that are particularly easy?

The band accepts everybody. Many people who haven't played musical instruments just hit something (percussion-wise) for the band.

Wow, you're from KY? Few of us at Stanford. Hope you come!

ok, I'm very excited about the band - and a KY student! First I've met on CC - are you from Louisville? Where did u go to high school?

When do you have vacations (winter/summer/spring break), and how long are they?

Thanksgiving break and spring break (last week of March) are 1 week each, winter break is 3 weeks (weeks of Christmas and New Year plus the week before or after), and summer break is 14 weeks (middle of June to end of August). Each quarter is 10 weeks plus a finals week, so that adds up to 52.

You mean end of september, right, not August?

Oh, yeah, right.

Awesome.
