Current Student...ask Away

hey guys,

sorry. been busy with classes and other crap. thanks to im_blue and marlgirl and the others for taking over. i'll try to give some input from now on...

hey current stanford cc people, we should meet up or something

we'll meet up at admit weekend

Anybody here going to the Seattle banquet on the 4th?

i am going on the 4th!

Perhaps in about a week?

who here is going to the l.a. banquet?

well anyone going to the nyc banquet on the sixth?

Calikent: You don't need to have any musical skill whatsoever to join Band. Just pick an instrument that sounds like fun, then talk to the section leader and you're in. The only exception is that due to high demand and low supply of drums, you have to try out to join the drumline. Musical ability is pretty much the least important criterion for getting in, though; it's mainly based on how much they like you.

The only exception to this is that there is a "Redvest" band (so named for their uniforms) that plays at basketball games in the winter, and this you do have to try out for (and be good on your instrument). My impression is that how competitive it is depends quite a bit on your section (though if you're starting a new instrument, you almost certainly won't get in your first year).

As for easy instruments to learn, I've heard the saxes are easy, but the trade-off there is that you will be largely drowned out by the brass. I'm not sure what else is easy/hard to learn.

Thanks - sounds great! How much time does band require? I wouldn't mind going to practice or anything, but I am thinking of it more as a hobby than a pursued talent. Is it another class period (would it force me to take fewer classes?)

Also - how easy is it to create your own major? I have no idea what I want to major in. I wish I could just take interesting classes and make them add up to some kind of degree. Any suggestions?

Great! I'll see you the Seattle banquet. We should figure out a way to find each other there.

What's the deal with these regional banquets? Are they organized by Stanford, or somebody else?

And...well, from past experience, I wouldn't expect any other Stanford admits from Kansas to be on CC...but if you happen to be, give me a PM.

any bay-area admits for the reception this sunday?

I wish Stanford had a banquet in the southeast... I feel left out, lol.

I got the thing about the Bay Area reception, but I'm not going. :( See you at Admit Weekend, though!

The time commitment for band is something like this:
Rehearsal every Monday from 7 to 8:30 or 9, all year.
During the fall, SMUT (field show planning session) after some rehearsals.
In weeks when we have a football game, field rehearsal Wednesday and Friday from 3 to 5. Also an early morning field rehearsal Saturday (basically, if you do the football game, it will take up most of your day Saturday).

In the winter, we have basketball games once or twice a week, plus stuff on Sunday nights. I'm not sure about spring, but I know it's a lot of rallies.

And Big Game week is insane. The saying goes, "If every week were Big Game week, we'd all be dead."

But all of the stuff is optional. You can come to whatever you have time to do. You'll get more out of it the more you do, but if you find yourself without time or with conflicts, you can just skip events. And if you find yourself with too much time and not enough band stuff to do, you can start arranging music or apply for staff.

First a nitpick on Sly Si's comments on band: you also have a weekly sectional meeting, which is when you meet with your instrumental section to practice for an hour or so.

Far more IMPORTANTLY: few people only come to band music events - band usually becomes a big part of your social life. There are quite a few band-affiliated social events throughout the year. Because of band's alcohol probation, not all of these are technically band affiliated.
In addition, most band people I know have very many band friends. Someone once jokingly said that "eventually, you lose all your non-Band friends" and while this is hardly true, it does play a big part of your social network

thanks - your comments are so helpful!

lol, lki, what the heck are you doing back on cc
and how's sle? when are we getting lunch, darnit?

neemi -- the bay area reception was great last year, i would definitely go. i have a few friends going, so i may just crash it anyway :)

Someone, I wrote this truly wonderful apologia for SLE... which was lost when the server reverted. But I feel I might as well impart my divine wisdom - lord knows i know more than any of the other students posting! (source: My Hubris, Stanford U Press, 2005).
Lunch - you should consider coming to ethics at noon on fridays. Call me, or better yet, send an email.

KIDS: Take this as an example of how hectic your supposedly chill stanford life becomes. It will take me weeks to schedule a dinners or lunches with people thanks to the wonderful, ever-present 'schedule conflict.' N'est-ce jolie?
