Current Student @ AU... ready to answer Qs

collegepa, have your daughter go to the school for an interview if not already, she can schedule on on her account, also, at admissions fairs and preview days def speak with an admissions officer. e-mails are good too, just if you have small questions (they must have gotten 20 e-mails from me), umm... AU admissions is really nice tho, so like i'm sure if she just called and chatted with them. idk what else to tell ya, good luck.

Only HS junior and transfers can schedule interviews in the spring, so we missed out. No college fairs this time of year and we've already done the campus tour/preview day. Guess I'll just have to at least make sure we're on the next chat. I have had a dialog with their Math Dept head and he was very encouraging. I may also call/email Admissions. Can't hurt, right? Just wish they did rolling like most other schools, this just prolongs the stress. Thanks for the advice.

CollegePA, fwiw, American U is having a financial aid chat online tomorrow evening starting, I think(?), around 7PM.

^^

Yea ur rite, if you got the email from AU then ur invited i think. Goes from 7-10. Damn i wish i could participate in that chat, but i have work tmr nite =(

the chats are often very sporadic and unorganized with tons of ppl it's lucky if you get your questions answered. i think it would be best to e-mail admissions.

but you could always just play the waiting game?

it's only like 40 more days :/ jk.

aren't most rolling admissions for like schools that aren't hard to get into, like bama and such, not that bama is a hard school, but it's acceptance is like 80% compared to AU which is 50%. but def get your daughter to apply to one rolling school and have others she wants as fallbacks those are great.

yeah..their chats are totally useless. most people are typing stuff like "WADDDDD UP ADMISSIONNNS PPL!!!!???? CAN U GET MYY FRIEND A SCHOLARSHIP????!!!!!!!"

hahah very different from the chats for wellesley college, where we discussed etymology.

The chats don't really have any transparency. It is pretty much all positive. When I did them last year people just basically repeated what was on the website.

I have a question for any current students: When in March does AU normally send out it's RD decisions? Early in month? Closer to April? I know that we're talking about only a few weeks difference here, but it would be good to have a bit more of a specific timeframe as to when to expect it. Thanks.

when i went on the chat i asked questions like "are students active in protests, etc. if so what are some examples?" and one of the admissions officers seemed really interested to tell me the protests and such he was involved in when he went to school there.

don't ask questions like... can i get in with a "...GPA and ...SAT" they will tell you they admidt on a hollistic scale.

I did the chat last night and found the admissions and financial reps to be very helpful, in spite of the fact that they were flooded with many of the same questions. their standard answer was that all decision letters would go out on Apr 1 and that financial aid varied based on each students situation. my D has already been accepted at 3 other rolling schools, so has some choices. but deep down, AU is really where she wants to go.

Same here. Regarding when the decision is received, the reason I asked about it in my last post is that it seemed like last year the notification times varied, according to this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=155357
But, regardless, we'll just plan on receiving it at the end of March, that way she won't stress if we don't hear right away.

Collegepa, good luck to your daughter.

I'm getting nervous with all of these negative comments about the students at AU. Is it really that bad a choice for a kid who doesn't get into G'Town and is totally into politics? Is it better to go somewhere in a totally different town (Like Nova in Philly) rather than being thought of as 2nd , 3rd best in D.C.?

I don't think so.
Mason is one of the only political schools in NoVa and it's not that great, it's a commuter school, i'm sure you could get a good education there, but idk.
Philiadelphia is such a dangerous city with not many opportunities such as working on capital hill, etc. idk i this AU is gonna be a great school, it is what you make it.

Some people may perceive AU as 2nd or 3rd in DC, but nationally I think it carries more weight. And almost schools The bottom line is weighing the cost/benefit of attending a school like AU vs Generic State U. I'm in that situation myself, my D isn't into politics (or at least isn't sure she is yet) and wants to major in a technical area, but still wants to attend AU for other reasons, like location / atmosphere / internship opportunities. She could probably get as good of a technical education at other schools, but may not be as happy. So if I can afford it, that's where she'll be.

I have to disagree with you on Philly though, since I live and work in the area. It's no more dangerous than any other major metro area, even DC has it's scary sections. Philly may not have the political advantages of DC but it does have opportunities in many other areas, like business, medical, pharmaceuticals, etc.

momonthehill, good luck to your D too. Maybe they can room together if they both get in.

yeah i have to agree with collegepa philly does have some bad parts but center city is great for the most part.. The apartments there are getting more and more expensive and the area around rittenhouse square is really nice and i didn't feel unsafe at all. Like any big city whether dc or philly you just have to use your judgement on where to travel and be a bit wise to what are the good parts of town. i would say most likely where your internships or job opps would be in philly would not be in a "dangerous area" the same goes for dc where jobs on the hill would be for the most part pretty safe..and as for nova or AU? i would have to pick AU over nova because of the location/atmosphere being close to capitol hill and also having a campus is a big plus..oh and villanova for the person who commented about philly being dangerous, villanova is one of the safest/wealthiest parts of suburban philly.. wikipedia says The most notable feature of Villanova, other than its extraordinary wealth, is Villanova University, from which the community gains its name. It is also home to many notable names in sports so its a very wealthy town..but also quite suburban theres also a joke about the schools name a play on words calling the school vanillanofun hah so yeah if i had to pick between the two it would be AU

hmm. Foxhall Road vs. Main Line...

Thank you all for your perspectives. Collegepa, good luck (to all of us!) with finances. Hopefully AU will come through with scholarships. AllenI, thanks for your comments as well. Sorry, dudedad, don't know enough about either town to understand Foxhall Road Vs. Main Line? Good luck to all.

foxhall road and the main line are just wealthy areas villanova is on the main line
and foxhall road is near au's campus and is known as a street with very nice homes

hey
i have some Qs about AU
how far is it to walk from letts to anderson ?
I'm from Holland so could i take my bike to AU to get around or will i get run over on my way to orientation? Because i hear cars aren't all that handy and neither is walking.

How does their International Relations program stand against other schools like GW, BU, NYU, George Mason etc.

thanks,,

cheers
