i'm new at this, and i just posted (for the first time) a message to "ryan" which i meant for you. you're both pretty anti-AU, but your assaults are unbelieveable! do you go there? where do you get your info from??? GW is now close to $60,000 a year, which pays for its glitzey website, and allows it to continue to buy up DC! it's academics are failing, along with it's "quality of life" measure. (see Princeton Review) the US News rankings are heavily influenced by votes from the "old boys", other college presidents...this is where politics have hurt AU, but i think that's changing. as i said to ryan, but really meant YOU...what's your problem? AU WAY outshines GW, has an actual campus tho in DC, is beautiful, etc, etc.**MY APOLOGIES TO RYAN, FOR MIXING YOU GUYS UP!

happy college mom, I do actually go to AU and I would challenge you to find anything in my posts that isnt true. Perhaps a bit negative, but for the most part that side of the story is an accurate one. I don't want to discount the positives that AU has. I agree with you, I would take AU over GW any day considering the large discrepancy in cost and the relatively low discrepancy concerning academics. In addition, I don't think AU has as many spoiled brats as GW(NO SCHOOL has as many spoiled brats as GW).

RYAN2288~
it's me again, and you really do frustrate me! you seem hung-up on stupid rankings, that hopefully most informed folks realize have "agendas" based on the source of the rankings, ie, who's paying off whom????AU is NOT dropping, but GOING UP!!! look at the '07 Princeton Review! these threadS are IN NO WAY overly positive about AU! my kid is there now, it was her FIRST CHOICE, AND SHE'D GOTTEN INTO MANY OTHER SCHOOLS, WHO GAVE HER MORE MONEY, but since this is such an awesome place, we've made it happen for her! she's beautiful and has had NO problem with finding males, friends, activities, and of course, DC.
**ALSO, DOES ANYONE KNOW THAT DAVID GREGORY OF MSNBC IS AN AU GRAD? AS IN, CHIEF WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENT?

ryan~ i just found your response to me from last night...so I appreciate your taking the time. i guess we'll continue to disagree. just go take all you can from the school...it really is an undiscovered treasure, at least for now. but that's changing...it'll be in the 40%tiles of acceptance any time now....good talking.

It does have us as the most politically active...I would say the most politically misguided, but ill give this to you as a positive. The only other place our school is ranked is "great college towns", which I think we have already established that DC is excellent. It also has us under "This is a library?" referring to the bad shape that our library is in. That is something I forgot to mention earlier - our library has to be the worst college library I have ever seen. However, the consortium allows you to order books from other universities in DC so its not that bad.

I'm glad your daughter is having a good time and like I said earlier, this school certainly fits a certain type, and by your comments im sure it fits your daughter. Good Luck.

collegepa~ as i'm a collegema, i want you to know AU is a great place. "interest" = interview. if you can't get one, call admissions and find out which counselor is in charge of your geographical area, and then call/email him/her. more than one visit also helps, and you show that by dropping those cards off at the Welcome center. and thanks for saving my sanity...everyone seems blind to the negative sabotaging going online here by ryan. his facts in many cases are WRONG, so i hope for his sake he doesn't debate! he's angry and unsure and i'm sorry for that, but he shouldn't be messing with nice, hopeful people online. hope to chat again, collegepa!

What facts have I used that are wrong? If anything, you are the one who is sabotaging the forum because you don't use any facts(or really anything of substance) with your extreme generalizations. Once again, I challenge you to point out what I said that was inherently not true. Instead, you simply use insults with no real basis to say that AU is some fantastic secret that nobody knows about. Again, I can tell that your daughter goes to AU - this is all I see here! The only thing you provided me is something about Princeton Review which to be honest, I don't know what statistics you were looking at.

And the media should never mention anything negative because heaven forbid, that would actually "mess" with "nice, hopeful" thoughts that really does not solve anything. Mind you college mom, people are considering making a 40K+ investment in this place(not to mention the costs with spent time), I think the least I can do is give people a more accurate representation of a place that I actually live in day in and day out. I respect your daughters opinion but I would prefer it if you would actually take the time out to mention specifics instead of simply getting flustered and speaking in ungrounded generalizations.

Happycollegemom, I think you are also giving an inaccurate representation of AU, by stating only everything that is positive about AU. No school, including HYP can be all positive. The purpose of this thread is for prospective AU students to learn more about this college, it is great that other AU students have pointed out many of the great things this college has to offer, however, the negative aspects of this school are equally important. Ryan2288 has pointed out both positive and negative aspects of AU and he has first hand experience to back it up. Obviously AU was not a good fit for Ryan2288, and he is transferring. I would personally like to thank Ryan2288 for his comments on this school because they have been very helpful. Before you all label me another AU basher; AU is one of my top choices, I will definitely attend if I get in, and if they make it affordable for me. I'm glad Ryan has pointed out some important things so that in the event I do enroll at AU I won't be totally disappointed.

advisormom~ i, too, am a mom, and of a VERY HAPPY AU student! GOOD FOR YOU and what you said, in response to ryan. GOD, i hope my kid never runs into him...he's soooo unhappy and spilling it out on everyone else.

ok...that got thru...just need to say AU isn't for everyone. don't think a troubled person should influence so many. can't beat AU for teacher commitment, kids with hope, who want to try to make a difference, unbelievable professors who work in DC, not to mention DC! food plan way costly, as are apartments, the minority thing is way overplayed, and i'll stop since i feel i can't freely say all i'd like to tohelp. BEST of LUCK to you, B407!

Ryan - sounds like AU is not for you even though many students are overly satisfied with the school and their internships. The students at AU have many opportunities and advantages that other schools do not offer especially in the international study area, which I do not think is your major. It is unfortunate that you cannot adjust to a school that has an academic level of a A- and an A- in local atmosphere. I hope you find your dream school.
