I’ve narrowed my college list down to the schools I really like, but I worry that financial aid will be an issue at some of them. I LOVE BROWN, but I’m afraid that the financial aid package won’t be enough. A lot of schools provide tables of average financial aid by income, but Brown doesn’t have anything of the sort.

My family’s income is in the $100,000-$130,000 range, so loans will be capped at $3k per year. I know it’s difficult to determine merely from income, but about how much (roughly!) would a package be in this income range?

Live in California…family assets are typical…no siblings

There is no way we can answer this question for you. You and your parents need to find an online financial aid calculator, and input the numbers for your family. Use one called the “institutional” method. Take the EFC (estimated family contribution) you get from filling that out, subtract that number from the cost of attendance: that will be an estimate of the financial aid you will get.

Many families in your income bracket don’t qualify for financial aid, but others will. It depends on so many factors (value of your house? size of assets?) that only by putting your specific numbers into a calculator can you get an idea of what you might get.

It is always a good idea to apply to financial safeties. And it’s also a really good idea to have a heart-to-heart talk with your parents about how much money they are prepared to spend before you apply anywhere.

call financial aid to get some insight. they keep changing their policy. the best thing you can do is apply and find out, if you get in!

In that income range, living from LI, I got very generous financial aid but that was almost entirely dependent upon the fact that I had a sibling in college at the same time.

In your range, it’s very difficult to know how much you’ll get, as fireandrain said, and it will be different at different schools. What I can tell you is that generally, Brown’s peers are better about financial aid for students whose family income is greater than 80k per year, give or take a bit.

The above link shows several financial aid examples based on different hypothetical families’ situations. Perhaps it can give you some basis for speculation. Besides that, I agree with the others’ suggestions above. My D has been getting excellent financial aid from Brown, but we are not in your parents’ income bracket at all.
