Question in the title. I got admitted EA; I'm just trying to gauge the amount of work I would have to do if I came to UChicago (which I probably will). How much do you current students work per week (a rough estimate), and what major (s) are you? This is probably useful for other prospies too, since it seems to me a major feature of chicago is the work load.

I’m a first-year working as a Bookstacks Assistant in the Regenstein, and I work about six hours a week. I’m hoping to major in Economics and Computer Science.

Oh, wait, you mean academic workload? Last quarter, I took three classes, went to class about 10 hours a week, and did about 15-25 hours of school work (reading/homework/labs/studying) a week. More for weeks with midterms and leading up to finals week.

I took AP5 bio, French 203, Readings in World Lit, and intro (bilingual) Chinese. I would say that my courseload is moderate compared to that of other first-years. Depending on the week I might spend anywhere from 12 (when there’s not much going on) to 30+ (when there are multiple major assignments due) hours on schoolwork. I have terribad time management, though.

Oh, and I spent about 17 hours a week actually in class/labs. Less if I skipped bio lecture, which I did occasionally. (Note to prospies: don’t be me.)

Depends on your classes, but nowadays I work about 25 quality hours a week. My job as a tutor in Harper is 8 hours a week and nets me about $100 weekly. So all in all, 33 hours-ish? And that’s been enough to get me a 3.8 GPA, so don’t sweat it.

Mandatory is a small note about the classes you take. Obviously, if you’re taking extremely demanding courses like Honors Analysis, the weekly average is going to be higher. Similarly, if you’re a physics major, you’re probably going to be working a good 5 hours more than if you’re an English major. (Don’t hit me. I’m a dual science/humanities major, and this is just what I’ve witnessed from my experience.)
