I'm thinking of Max P...I want a double, hopefully social dorm as a freshman (I've heard closing the doors in Max blocks out sound for studying, is this true?), I don't mind modern (my biggest criteria is cleanliness), I like the idea of the setup for a freshman, and the bathrooms are a perk (I don't mind cleaning them). I'm from California, so I think close to campus as a freshman would be better for me, but I'm hoping current students can help me out. I also like the Shoreland, but since it will soon be disappearing as a dorm, and I have never lived in winter weather below 50 degrees, I don't know how that would work.

Also, I'm a picky eater, and I think I would be best off eating in Bartlett, since it's on points and after doing a couple of overnights at other schools, I think that I would do best eating in a non-all-you-can-eat place.

Another question-- Can students have coffeemakers in Max P?

So yeah, if you've visited/attend, I would appreciate your opinion. I'll be visiting for the 20-21 overnight, but I would like to put down a deposit ahead of time, so at least I can change later but will have the best chance at getting my first choice.

Or, if based on my criteria, do I belong somewhere else?

max p is awesome. i really liked the shoreland as well, but i felt that it was too far from the main campus and i thought it might make me a little too isolated. and the apartments, though big, were run-down and the wood and paint were chipping. i was kind of afraid of mice.

when I went to U.Chi and randomly met a friend from school, she took me to her dorm in Max P. She likes it for exactly the same reasons you do-- it's "clean," right near the center of everything, has bartlett as its dining hall. The dorms are doubles, but they're nicely sized, and the hallways are very bright and airy.

Those are definitely my reasons-- and things I can't get from other dorms. I'm sure I could adjust to any dorm, but I'm just killing the next week before I get to visit by meaninglessly pondering my dorm assignment!

Amykins-- Are you going to U of C/have you chosen a dorm?

is it true that one bathroom will have a sink and a shower, and the bathroom across the hall has a sink and a toilet?

because that would be very inconveninent, if you have to use the bathroom, and your bathroom only has a shower and a sink, and your across the hall neighbor isn't home.

I stayed in Max P last night - basically the way it works is that when you open the door into the double there is a foyer with 4 doors. In front of you are two double rooms (two rooms 4 people) and on the left in a shower and sink and the right is a toilet and sink. Basically when you go into either room you lock the door and when you leave the door is unlocked - you can't lock it from the outside. So basically all 4 of you share the two rooms and it doesn't matter if your the only one there - you have equal access to both the toilet and shower.

Personally I really dislike MaxP as a dorm. From the short time I stayed there, it was just depressing - the people seemed depressed, listlessly wandering inbetween rooms and many of the rooms had half empty bottles of liquor on shelves. People were blasting music past 12:00 and were still wandering around past 2:00. On the other hand I did a dorm tour of BJ and I like it much better - did anyone stay there, and if so could you tell me how you liked it? The other dorm I'm interested in is Snell-Hitchcock, but I didn't get a chance to see it - any thoughts?

The two half-bathrooms are both in the same suite. No walking across the hall. Four people to two half-bathrooms.

Coffeemakers are against the "rules." However, they don't exactly search for them...

Hah, well, I put down my deposit last night. I said Max was my first choice (for medical reasons I need a private bathroom, even though I don't mind communal ones). We'll see.

Snell is mostly singles - not too many spots for 1st years, though. If you were admitted EA you have a better shot at getting your 1st or 2nd pick.

well, they dont have a policy against the liquor bottles, only against kegs (strictly no kegs). I mean, there are LAWS against underaged students having hte liquor bottles but housing staff are not police officers and the housing policys only prohibit from being in common areas.

coffee makers they have policies against but nobody will stop you. also they just announced that they are opening the max p kitchens to the residents which is pretty fricking sweet.

Ah, Otto, that rocks. I heard the kitchens were pretty much unaccessible...it's nice to know they will be opened up. And I'm definitely getting a coffeemaker. I put Max as my first choice, and I think I've applied early enough to have a good shot.
