Current Students-- what aspects of CMU do you dislike?

In general, opinions of people are particularly divided over the KGB. The one I hear voiced most often is "entertaining for short periods of time." But, if the KGB is not your style, they're not hard to avoid- just don't go in the linux cluster they inhabit. Easier said than done, I suppose, if you need a linux cluster, but possible. When I visited for sleeping bag weekend, I met the KGB (well, technically cslounge). While I didn't see myself spending all my time with them, I liked that such a unique group of students seemed to exist on campus.

Social scene from a freshman point of view seems normal as it was back in high school. It also depends on your dorm floor, our floor is wild, people just visit each other room till 3am and do random stuffs (chillin, studin). If your quiet and expect people to talk to you than its pretty tough (1st two weeks), you just have to walk around and introduce your self. As much as these people have fun they are also serious about studies and do work hard. So it just depends on what you make out of it.

Anyone know any good asian food places or noodle houses on campus or nearby? Any Jamba Juice?

I've seen one Jamba Juice in Pittsburgh, but I can't remember where. I think they have a store locater on their site.

As far as Asian food, it depends how Asian you are. On campus, you have Bento Bowl, which has nothing to do with real Asian food, but it's decent. It's off-campus counter-park is Lulu's Noodles on Craig St, which also is extremely Americanized but doesn't taste bad (however, I don't go there cause I don't find it to be a good value). Also on campus, there is Asiana, which gives the biggest portions of any meal block on campus. Their food is sub-par but not too Americanized, in my opinion. Off campus, you can go to Orient Express on Forbes (not my cup of tea, but some will disagree with me due to their ridiculously low prices). Also, there is Little Asia on Craig St, which I like a lot - basic Chinese food with both americanized and ... not americanized dishes. If you want to get delivery, there was this place called New Dumpling House, except they changed their name to something similar. They have red and white menus, and their food is good.

If you go to Squirrel Hill, there are some more Asian places, and the food trucks behind campus also have some Asian and noodle choices. Basically, there are a lot of places to get noodles and Asian food, so shop around.

Ok.. umm I like asian food (i'm asian) but the I've been avoiding asian food here.

Bento Bowl - I've never tried so i can't say anything about it. But my friends have had it and said it was ok. But it looks kinda strange (off color).
Asiana - Um. Yeah. Lots of portions. But it doesnt taste good.
Lulu's - off campus. I've been there twice. Both times, it SUCKED. The 2nd dish i got, was supposed to be one of the really good ones.
Orient Express - uhh.. it's like, really really greasy (EXTRA greasy) and it tastes bad also.
Food trucks - I've never tried but i heard that it's really good, cheap but the places are supposed to be really unhygenic haha.

Rose Tea Cafe on Forbes in Squirrel Hill is always packed with international students. They have the most authentic Taiwanese cuisine around.

Orient Express is not bad depending on the dish. I recommend the salt & pepper pork chops. The cooking style is more cantonese style, though a lot of dishes are more Americanized. However, they're close, cheap, and fast, so it's a trade off.

Thai Food truck is pretty clean actually. Chinese food truck has too much grease. The Mediterranean/Greek food truck is especially popular for their gyros.

Hahaha I've tried a lot of those places. I have to say, the pearl milk tea in Pittsburgh isn't too great compared to the ones in California =]

Oh, well. You're not exactly at CMU for the food though... more like for the academics.

Ya, DO NOT come here for the food (see my first post in this thread).

EDIT: as an update, even if there really was a new contract, the food didn't really get much better, but at least it didn't get worse.

Zaw's on Murray in Squirrel Hill is cheap and tastes good (can eat for under $5). Mostly carry out, but they do have a counter you can eat at. The place only takes cash and is a bit dirty around the edges, but I'd recommend it.
