Current Texas Tech Freshman. Ask me anything you need to know!

Are students allowed to have bed lofts in the dorms?

Well it depends which dorms you will be staying in. In Tech there are different categories of dorms.

One is the “traditional type”, which is all built in furniture (beds,desks,etc.). You won’t be able to put one it these.

The second one is the “moveable furniture type”. You could technically put one in here but you’ll have to remove the bed that comes with the room but put it in your own storage space. The Texas Tech Housing Department won’t take the bed for you and store it themselves.

The third one is the “upperclassmen dorms” (Murray, Carpenter-Wells, Talkington). I’ve never lived in these dorms but I’m guessing they are moveable furniture as well. Again you’ll have to put the bed that came with the room in your own storage.

you say there are engineering dorms, what about science and pre meds? And which are the honors dorms, and what do you think about them?
i am a
hs senior looking at tech, ut, a and m, and some lac in the south.

do you know anyone on the premed track? i posted another thread here about that, btw.

thanks!

and so sorry to hear about the lack of welcome with international students. that is sad!! hope next year is better.

I know the pre-med dorm is the Stangel/Murdough complex.

The science dorm would be at the STEM dorm, which is Sneed Hall.

Anyone can live in these dorms but they have specific learning communities for people of the same major (ex. pre-med, engineering, etc.).

Here is the URL for the learning communities. [Texas Tech University :: University Student Housing :: Learning Communities](Texas Tech University :: University Student Housing :: Learning Communities)

As for the international students, I believe that they do fine at the school.
I know a few and they have many friends.

As for anyone on the pre-med track, I do not know anyone on it.

The honors dorms are a great environment to meet people, and there are lots of Pre med students in the honors college. There is no lack of Pre Med’s at Tech at all.

If you have any questions let me know. I’m a Pre med who lived in the honors dorm.

@redraidergirl- could you tell me more about the honours college programme and how it differs from normal classes? Because everyone advises me to enroll in it but I know next to nothing about it  is it only for certain classes or what?

The best thing to do is to look around the website and it gives you a ton of information ( honors.ttu.edu) but ill tell you briefly about it. You can be any major to be in the honors program. They offer a variety of classes - English, science, history, etc. There is bound to be some you need for your major or just the required general Ed classes. The honors classes are smaller (usually around 30 students) and more individualized. You usually take 1 honors course a semester or more. I’ve had nothing but great experiences in honors. The profs really care and want you to do well. There are also lots of great programs through the honors college, such as the Early Acceptance to Med School. Browse around the website and let me know if you have any more specific questions :)

What are my chances of getting into Texas Tech. its my dream school.

In this link, the requirements for assured admission relating to SAT (Math and Critical Reading) score and class rank. Hope this helps.

Is stangel/murdough a good dorm to live in? What is the overall atmosphere?

Hi, I am a senior at a New York public high school and will graduate from this school but am not a permanent resident or citizen of the US. My stats:
Top 15% of class (115/901)
2190/2400 (1480 CR+M)
GPA: 94.43/100

What are my chances? Will I be eligible for the out of state tuition waiver? Thanks in advance!

Would you say the campus in general tends to be more conservative or liberal? I’ve heard TT is pretty conservative, which to me is great.

Hello Everyone.

I am an International student who has been doing his High School at an American International School somewhere in Asia. I have lived in many places including California but move around because of my dad’s jobs. He works for an Oil Company. I am interested in applying to Tech’s Petroleum Engineering program. How are my chances?

SAT composite score 1300 ( 700 Math and 600 Critical Reading)
SAT combined score 1950 with 650 writing ( My School’s Average is 1730)
I am doing the IB so am predicted around 35-37 out of 45
There is no class rank for my school because we have less than 55 students and only around 40 are doing the IB
My career gpa is around 2.8/4.0 nonweighted and my school doesn’t weight (B- average in tough rigorous courses)

Senior Year Classes:

IB Literature HL
IB Economics HL
IB Biology HL
IB Chem SL
IB Math SL
IB Spanish Sl
TOK

Over 300 hours of Community work since I happen to be living in a third world country because of my dad’s expat job. I really enjoy doing Community Service.

3 week internship for an NGO

Been on many trips with my classmates including flying thousands of miles to live in a Cambodian village for a week.
My essays will hopefully be great along with really good Teacher Recommendations.

The reason I am asking for my chances is because I don’t know much about Texas Tech and I though you guys would know. Thank you very much!

Is Murray good for international students? I’m transferring in spring (engineering). I like an intellectually-engaging and decent social atmosphere, and I’m not really into constant partying. What housing do you guys think is best suited for me?

Hello, I have been accepted into Texas Tech University and have already selected my housing to reside in Horn dorm next fall… It seems to appear that Horn is not affilitated with any community, so is it kinda like a free for all?

I am studying to be a lawyer, but I like the spacious room and feel of the moveable furnished rooms… reason why i have chosen it. It seems to me that Murdough hall is the actual dormitory for pre-law students… but I like horn hall :frowning: is it that big of a deal to be in a dorm hall with people who are ALL studying the same subjects you are studying?

I know it would be cool to form study groups and stuff but since Horn hall isnt a learning community dorm (only Knapp is) then, wont there be people of all different studies around?
GO TECH! YAY! lolol

I have been accepted to TTU and will be a transfer student in Petro Eng Spring 2014. My RRO is in January.

The classes I need according to my degree plan are full already. What happens next?

Just how conservative is TT? Will my son be a pariah if he is an agnostic, for example, or has liberal ideas? He is a sensitive, interesting kid and not at all a partier type. He’s never even gone on a date with a girl even though he’s a senior in high school (and no, he isn’t gay…he did have a sweetheart in 8th grade and is interested in girls, but now is too busy with extracurriculars and academics to ask one out I think.) Will TT be a total mismatch for him? He wants to major in Chemical Engineering but also march in band. He is social and friendly and gets along with people well, though, and is probably the most non-judgmental person I know. Thanks for any advice.

“Just how conservative is TT? Will my son be a pariah if he is an agnostic, for example, or has liberal ideas?” - Borderline absurd question, especially considering there are plenty of liberal or agnostic students attending. I wonder why I have never seen a conservative parent asking that about the liberal universities, which is just about all of them with the exception of possibly Hillsdale College, Texas A & M, and Texas Tech. I’m sure your son will be just fine.
