Current U of C Freshman taking Questions

In your opinion, for Uchicago, can essays/test scores make up for gpa?
I know Uchicago isn't that big on stats, but how many kids do you know that got in with low GPAs?

Thanks very much idad!
I loved the picture and the campus map - interesting building and Hinds is next to the bookstore and Crerar Library! I know D would enjoy that. D is primarily interested in Environmental Geology/Environmental Chemistry. It does appear that the university has faculty and ongoing research in these areas, including the Center for Integrating Statistical and Environmental Science. As I am not really familiar with the area, I was just wondering what current undergrads thought of the department. University of Chicago is currently her first choice - unless she decides to pursue Environmental Engineering. Thanks for your help. I have certainly enjoyed reading your comments on the forums.

Good to see the first comment of the morning. I was hesitant being the first poster AFTER DAWN, but now there's nothing stopping me! =)

badkarma89,
your gpa will be considered with the rest of your application - the strength of your schedule, test scores, and so on. My son was admitted with a 3.6 UW but strong everything else. One of the things that Chicago will want to see is that you have figured out how to be a student - so if you GPA wasn't so hot in the past, try to make this year the best ever.

uh oh... my grades dropped as the years went by... from all A's fresh/soph year to 1 B semester junior year.. and now my midyear report has 2 B semesters and a drop in rank from 20 to 26... so i guess i basically have no chance even if my essays were somewhat good? iono i guess looking at my gpa, it seems like im becoming a worse student -_-

Just wait already...
Your time will come, no use worrying now of all times...

Go to northwestern. The 'ultimate key to college' at the UofC is learning - not alcohol.

Of course, it's true, if you want to party, go to Northwestern. If you want to remember your college years as being fun and informative, go to the U of C.

Northwestern is considered a party school? That's new to me.

Am I the only one who loves to drink/party AND learn? Whats wrong with parties?

Anyway, thats off topic.

I don't think Northwestern is considered a party school compared to UWisconsin or other schools. But it can be seen as a party school when you take the quality of academics and students I guess.

But thats off topic too...

Q. on UChicago:
How easy is it to get the classes you want to get? In my college, you have compete with everybody and its rare for people to get their ideal schedule/classes, so I was wondering if it was different at UChicago.

Also, how are the class sizes for freshman courses, and did you have all professors or did grad students teach as well?

Lastly, how is the interaction between Northwestern and UMich? I think I read somewhere that it is common for UChicago students to go to UMich at times.

Thanks

i like to drink/party on occasion -- nothing's wrong with parties, but they can happen in excess (there's a few people at my current school that i've never seen sober).

but when beer ends up making you fat, you party too much. (what has happened with a lot of my old HS friends)

Beer Belly!!!!

no kidding, it's nasty as hell. i'm not a fan of things jiggling in the wrong places.

cellulite and jiggly legs, and jiggly arms, flabbiness...

bad visual... thanks for that. i'm apparantely "strange" because i don't really like jiggly butts. i like bouncing quarters!

Well butts shouldn't be jiggly. They should be firm...

agreed (10 chars)

Anybody know about film at UChicago? As say, compared to NU or NYU or USC?

well, nothing is really comparable to NYU-tisch or USC-film school, but you can do some more research. remember...GOOGLE is your best friend

i consider jeeves a closer companion

oh really now...jeeves is nice, but kinda soft around the edges, if you know what i mean.

Thanks guys, this thread was getting way too informative.
