I am a current UChicago applicant, and I am considering purchasing an iPad to view my textbooks on next year at college. I am not sure of the quantity of textbooks for purchase on the iPad for the typical student at UChicago. Current students, your help is much appreciated.

I’m a current first year with an iPad who hasn’t used it for any textbooks. I think the key to saving money on textbooks is getting them as early as possible. For example, I got my Calc textbook over the summer for around $50 and my answer key for free. Some of my friends got their books from the bookstore right before the quarter started were paying around $180-200something for just the textbook. I also saved a lot on my Hum books by getting 2 from the Reg (free!) one from Powell’s ($5 as opposed to $20 at Semcoop) and renting one. So far I haven’t purchased any on my iPad (it’s also a lot more comfortable for me to read from an actual book than from my iPad screen) but have saved a lot of money anyway :)

Edit: If you read the course evaluations for the professors sometimes they will list the textbooks that you will use in the class.

^^ Love the user name, Haroldschicken. Now I’m hungry.

Not much use in getting an iPad for textbooks (although a lot of people are using it for easy note-taking and the like). UChicago Marketplace and bigwords.com are your friends!

On the other hand, I haven’t bought a textbook yet - I use downloaded PDFs exclusively.
