I am getting my son the torero ready laptop and was wondering about printers…does everyone have their own or share with a dormmate? Do people use a safe for valuables? He’s in missions a and his roommate hasn’t returned e-mail contact yet…(he’s taking this as a bad sign) …but what kind of stuff is in the room? It says a desk and chair, dresser and bed. Can he bring a different desk chair? Do we need bed risers for underneath storage? What kind of laundry bag would be best? Does laundry take the campus card or quarters? Thanks so much in advance!!!

Sorry I’ve been slow as of late!

“How popular are sports there? Do a lot of people play or go see the games? Are athletes looked down on as not as smart as everyone else?”

At USD sports are really no big deal. A lot of people play something, but people really only care about basket ball. Also, Athletes are mostly looked at as students. You usually do no really even know who the athlete students are.

Hello again goseimoes!

“I am getting my son the torero ready laptop and was wondering about printers…does everyone have their own or share with a dormmate?”

This totally depends on your dorm mate. I would suggest just waiting until you get there, or get a hold of his roommate. There are printers on campus also. They charge you something like 10 cents a page, but this is what I did a lot of the time just for simplicity.

“Do people use a safe for valuables?”
Some people do. What type of valuables is he intending to bring?

He’s in missions a and his roommate hasn’t returned e-mail contact yet…(he’s taking this as a bad sign)
Don’t take it as a bad sign! Try searching on facebook and stay calm. :-)

What kind of stuff is in the room? It says a desk and chair, dresser and bed. Can he bring a different desk chair? Do we need bed risers for underneath storage?
You do not need risers, you will have plenty of room. You can bring your own desk chair. I hated the desk chair and used my own.

What kind of laundry bag would be best?
Well… I am a girl who hated lugging my laungry around. I just bought a nice laundry basket with a bag in it. I would grab the laundry bag, put it in a suitcase, and then roll it down the stairs and over to laundry. Not that it is far, I just always had to much laundry.

Does laundry take the campus card or quarters? Thanks so much in advance!!!
The laundry is on its on laundry card. You pay like 5 dollars and get a card with like 2 dollars on it. Then you just load it up with money. The dryers are awful and usually take two rounds to get things like towels and sheets dry.

Anything else??

Honestly, how hard is it to fit in here if you are a minority?

No, I think you answered all my questions…until I can think up some more!! Thanks so much!!
You’ve been extremely helpful!!

hey whats the best and cheapest way to get books and do on campus residents need to buy parking permits?

Order your books on Amazon or another of the online discount sources. The bookstore does have a bit of a rep for being out of the books you need…best to go with your own…and much much cheaper! You only need to buy a parking permit if you have a car (guessing you do and the permits will be good through the school year including summer sessions.

by any chance does anyone have the ITMG cutom book for Perry?

Hi there! My daughter and I just toured USD and liked it very much. I know USD has a dance team, more a cheer/dance team, the Spirit Squad. Can you tell me if it’s 1)good and 2)well thought-of by students and sports fans? She really wants to dance in college.

Thanks.

Hey, I’m going to be a freshman next year and I was just wondering if there were any classes/professors that you would especially reccomend?

Bubbly, if you go on a website to “rank” or “rate” the teachers, that can be helpful. I don’t think I can put the website on here though but it helped my son in picking his precept advisor!

@gosimoes I did the same thing to pick my precept class I was just wondering if any current students has any personal recommendations.

Gosimoes, my son was in Missions A last year and one of his suite mates donated a tv for the living room and then of course several xbox and ps3 were added to the mix.
Not sure who is on the list this year for precept advisors but he had Dr. Statler and would highly recommend her! He has also found that the website to rate the professor was 50/50 for accuracy.

The bathroom shower has a door and there are very large double sink vanities with lots of drawers and cupboards for each student to store bathroom items…also plenty of towel racks. Their is a Costco and Target very close by so don’t worry :-)

Awesome, thanks sooo much!! I’m almost ready!! Hope my son is!

Correct me if I am wrong but I was told from a friend that there is no school spirit? As in no one goes to the sporting events. Is this true?

hi, i’m a currrent student at a jc looking to transfer next fall. i’ve visited the campus and it’s beautiful and the academics are superb. I was just wondering how the social life is there. Like would there be parties on a tuesday or something? Do a lot of people party? I know its not state but i’m more interested in usd.

Hi i’m really interested in USD but since i live out of state and can’t bring the car, is it hard transportation wise to get to places outside of USD?

A car is certainly not necessary as USD has shuttle service to many SD locations and SD has a great public transportation. Also USD is very nicely located to many attractions. I would guess that over half of the students have cars and most of them are very used to taking students without cars places they need to go.
