Current Weather Conditions in Bloomington

We are scheduled to fly from CA to Indianapolis tomorrow morning for freshman orientation on Tues and Wed. I am concerned about the current flooding being reported in the area and as of yesterday the highway from the airport to IU was closed due to flooding. Can anyone living in the area give me a current report on the weather/road conditions? The school has not sent an email either confirming or cancelling the orientation, so I assume it will go on as scheduled. I did call my hotel last night and they said the road was closed but should be open by Monday. Thanks for any local updates.

My son called his friends in Bloomington yesterday (he was concerned about them because of the weather) and found out that as of the time he called (around 5 PM Eastern time) all the roads in and out of Bloomington were closed.

We have not called yet today, but hopefully someone else who is living there can give an update--and hopefully the situation has improved.

P.S. He was told that some people were kayaking down some of the low-lying roads. Obviously, this is really unusual weather for Bloomington and Indianapolis.

Thanks Calcruzer. I just called the hotel again and they said the roads are open again, for the time being. They said things can change very quickly. The weather is just so different in that area from what we are used to in CA. But, my daughter wanted "weather" and "four different seasons" so I guess she'll find it in Bloomington!

Sounds like my own son--who wanted a bit of "snow"--until he forgot how much cold weather comes with it. On the other hand, it's a great school for academics and for fun stuff to do. (Princeton Review gives it a "91" on its "quality of life" rating--which means it ranks higher than 90% of all schools rated on its "top 365 colleges" list.)--and I know why (beautiful campus, great college town, good music and theatre productions every year, fun sporting events, lots of social and academic events, etc.).

I hope your daughter enjoys her college years at IU-B.

Yes, IU-B is a beautiful campus with alot to offer. I know that I would love going to a school that has all of the wonderful traditions and opportunities that you listed. Our kids are very lucky and I hope they take advantage of everything the school has to offer. I suppose it is hard to understand at their age what a magical time in their lives they are experiencing as college students - especially if they have an eye on the future with plans for graduate school or a professional career of any kind.

I guess I'm feeling kind of sentimental as my D prepares to leave for college...

Hey, CA-MOM, I'll be there Tuesday and Wednesday too. Look for me, I have short, curly, blond hair. I am a little worried about getting there too although our journey is much shorter than yours. We'll take I-74 to SR 231 South to 46 to Bloomington. Anyone know how those roads are?

Hi Izzie,

I found this website through Yahoo (local news for Bloomington). I don't know why it didn't highlight, but here is the link to road conditions via a tv station website: WISH TV 8: Indianapolis News and Weather - June Flooding: Disaster Declarations, Shelters & Road Closures

I'll be on the lookout for you! :)

Oh, good! It did highlight!

Thanks, CA-MOM, it looks like we're good for now. We only live about 2 1/2 hours away but we'll leave plenty early to allow for detours.

I live in B-ton. We're expecting rain on Mon and Tuesday. No major flooding here, but most of the counties north, east, and west of us have experienced major flooding. The river of concern doesn't run through Monroe County so we're luckier. I expect flooding south of us tomorrow though.

Izzie--I would recommend an alternate route to B-ton. Spencer is flooded, (231 and 46) and I don't believe the river has peaked yet there. It will be longer, but I would suggest 74 all the way to 465 and then down. (See below)

CA mom--I've been finding that the Indy newsites are a bit off somewhat in reporting updates. At some point today the road, 37, to B-ton was open, but local media is reporting that it's best to detour off of it. Also suggested was this route:

• SOUTHBOUND 37: Southbound 37 is CLOSED from Indianapolis to north of Martinsville for road repair. ISP suggests drivers take Ind. 67 south from Indianapolis, and use the Ind. 39 exit through Martinsville to pick up Ind. 37 south of Martinsville to Bloomington.

From the airport I "think" 67 is exit 8 off of 465. Time will be about the same.

It seems that the local paper has the most recent updates and gives a time for the update. The address is HeraldTimesOnline.com - Bloomington, Indiana newspaper

Welcome to Bloomington! BTW, calcruzer is correct--this is highly unusual weather for this area.

Thank you for the update rrah and the welcome to Bloomington. I appreciate the first-hand weather report. We'll be flying all day tomorrow, so hopefully when we arrive in the evening we'll hit better driving conditions.

Thanks, rrah, we will take your suggestion.

Im here in bloomington now because im taking summer classes. 37 reopened sunday night so yall should be fine.
