Cursing in an essay

Like it says up there, is it ok? Nothing major, just an exclamatory “Damn”. Is it still too bad?

I don't think damn will be a big deal.

my english teacher told us once- no it reflects badly on u that u had to -i quote "lower your expression standards" or something of the sort... that u can achieve the same effect wid sumn classier
it's up 2 u

Pimpcess05: Your English teacher is not an admissions officer.

Use your most natural voice. Damn is fine.

hey ok
my english teacher did go to college tho

are you going to college?

it really doesn't sound like it.

honestly not if ppl lik u r around
i type the way i feel like aite
esp

Because I curse once? I guess because someone drinks or smokes, then you don't think they should go. Just wait till you go to college.

there's no need to pick on other people
this is supposed to be about helping each other out. not finding fault with one another!
well whatever say wut u want i don't give!

It's not about if you say damn in real life or not. It just may rub somewrong in an essay and doesn't show that great of judgement. Unless it really fits and you are such a great writer that you can capture spoken dialogue. Otherwise there' just no reason for it--points off on style.

that's my point and my english teacher's! bettina jus says it much better

using the word "damn" gives a bad impression of you

Unless you are directly quoting Rhett Butler, or someone equally notable, you should be able to find a better word. :)

"Alas!"---

I've been raised to not use cuss words, so I wouldn't use anything of the sort in my college essay. Just my 2 cents.

I don't care how you speak in real life, it could send a bad message. It's not like you have the excuse of, it just slipped out. as the saying goes, put your best foot forward

Oh for god's sakes..."Damn" is not going to do anything...they'll skim the essay and not even pick up the word...reading this thread, you would think that we're in an 1800s church or something...

I don't know if it would cost you admission, but it might raise a red flag. The VAST majority of accepted students to any college get in based on their voice, and they don't need to resort to swearing to show their voice. If you can find a way around it, I would.

Try "fiddlesticks" or for emphasis, "Oh fiddlesticks!"

Uh...

Shucks?

It depends on the context, though. Perhaps he should show us the paragraph.
