<p>Why ask us? The admissions person who ends up reading your essay is the one whose opinion matters. Since you don't know if he or she will or will not care about the use of damn, it's best not to use it. In my opinion, the phrase is too colloquial to use in an admissions essay anyway.</p>
<p>I said "$#!+" and "damn" and probably a few other choice words in a school-sponsored (high school) scholarship essay and won. Of course, it was a personal narrative essay and I chose to write about a particularly grueling cross country practice. </p>
<p>But in your case, it could matter, it might not.</p>
