Great article. One thing that was not mentioned was how much colleges are spending on facilities and how that is raising the cost of attendance. I am amazed at the dorms, high end eateries, and recreation facilities that are campuses. What happened to the days of a simple existence, and bare dorm minimums? No wonder kids feel entitled.

Partyof…I can’t comment on ALL colleges, but I will say in the case of
BOTH of my kids’ undergrad schools, there were campaigns to raise money to build the new library, athletic center, pool, etc. The money was NOT taken out of tuition money to do these things…so they don’t belong in that article.

Improving and upgrading dorms, and other student used areas is important. Many older ones need upgrades, and to be honest, where students live and eat is an important component of school selection.

Thumper, most schools I know offer students a choice of dorms. A student does not HAVE to live in the single room, en-suite bath, dorms. IME, colleges tend to provide the highest or high average dorm in the COA. Yes, there are some urban schools without a lot of less expensive alternatives, but for the most part, there are choices.
