Could someone please tell me what you think of the Freshman dorms? I know that there are three themes. What do you think of them? Are the bathrooms co-ed? Trying to figure out if girls are on one floor and guys on another, or what?

There is Mistletoe (houses are Hitchcock, Cutler, Pierce, and Storrs, more stereotypically a party dorm, mostly because of the co-ed floors and quad-style rooms. theme is community service but i feel like it gets overshadowed by the drama that goes on), Juniper (theme is multiculturalsim, houses are Raymond, Sherman, and Norton), and Cedar (has the 2 newly-renivated houses-- Taft and Smith, as well ast Tyler. theme is arts-- definitely has the best community counsel- they do a lot of activities!)

No first-year bathrooms are co-ed. If you are on a co-ed floor, there are 2 sets of bathrooms.

jkrtist, I’m going to have to disagree with you about Mistletoe. Mistletoe is NOT just community service, but also leadership. I lived in Hitchcock my freshman year, and although the Mistletoe residence halls are generally considered the “party” dorms, I found that many of my fellow residents ARE campus leaders, from presidents of fraternities and habitat for humanity, to volunteer EMTs and researchers. I lived in Mistletoe from 2010-11, and in my experience, there was no more drama than in any of the other residence halls. Individuals may have roommate issues, but I wouldn’t call that widespread drama.

Just as an easier to read list that repeats jkrtist’s:
Juniper: Multiculturalism, involved in events like a biannual Cultural Dinner
Cedar: Performing arts, involved in a 24-hour play
Mistletoe: Leadership and community service, involved in a PB&J Relay and several leadership conferences.

Mistletoe has co-ed floors, but on those floors, there are two bathrooms, one for each gender.

The “best community counsel” varies from year to year, since different people live in the communities ever year. This year, this might be true. I would choose your residential community based upon which of the themes you’re more interested, not what people on the internet say.

I am interested in how current CASE students would describe the atmosphere of the various freshmen dorms. Beyond the “multiculturalism, arts, and leadership/community service”. Do the dorms that make up a “house” vary in their atmosphere? I am particularly interested in learning more about Smith and Taft. Jkrtist commented that they are newly renovated. Did they do the bedrooms? baths? common areas? the entire building? The webpage for Cedar has no events listed, but this thread lists some of their activities. If any upperclassmen/alumni are reading this thread, what freshmen dorm did you live in? What did you like about it? What would you change? Any opinion on the suites vs. traditional dorms?
Thank you.

My S will be attending in fall 12. Anyone knows when students are asked about theme and roomate background preferences? And in the past, how much CWRU were really matching up roomates according to students preferences? Would a late commitment (close to April 30) detrimental to dorm selection? Thanks.

nhpmom,

My daughter went to the “Case Western Reserve University Class of 2016” Facebook group. She posted that she was looking for a roommate and told a little about herself. She received a PM from a girl who was similar to her and they paired up to be roommates.

Once the student registers, they have access through that checklist to request a roommate and select a room. It was a bit weird to get them in the same room together, which ever one of the two request the room mate (you have to have their student id not name to do it) then it sends a request to the other. Which then that person accepts…then the person who accepted the request gets to choose the room. Both my D and her roommate had agreed on which themed dorm housing they wanted and approx where they would like their room. So my daughter selected the room and then it registered both girls in that room. ← Hope that’s not a confusing explanation of the process.

As far as if you allow the system to use the match process. D was told by another student that they match people who answer 2 out of the 5 questions identical. So if you just look for rooms available, it may show rooms with one person already assigned. That person would have matched in at least 2/5 of the questions for the system to show them as an option.

There seem to be a lot of students still trying to find roommates, so I wouldn’t worry. You son can choose any of the three themes he prefers. Mistletoe seems to be the most popular and Case’s fb page for housing says it was on hold for a while to release new rooms for mistletoe until they figure out the male/female ratio to assign new floors for the number needed. But other than that, there should be plenty available.

BluePoodle - thanks for replying with great details!

Hi all - glad to see this thread. We are just turning our attention to housing and I think my son is in the process of filling out whatever questionnaires there are. I guess I’m wondering a few things:
- When does this housing thing start to get sorted out? What do you recommend in terms of looking for a roommate? Is the facebook page the best way or is there some other Case system out there?
- It looks to me like there are a lot of single options for freshmen, and they are not hugely more expensive than doubles (well, everything is relative). Do freshman like singles, or it more social to have doubles? Are there enough singles (Seems to me like everyone would want a single with a bath)?
