D1 - need based scholarship with athletic scholarship

I heard that D1 baseball cannot combine Need Base scholarship with Athletic scholarship. The athlete has to pick one or the other. Is this true? I’ve read that it can be combined however I’m not sure if they were talking about D1 baseball.

ask this on the Athletic recruiting forum

@twoinanddone Could you respond?

No, an athletic grant cannot be combined with a need based aid from the school. The athletic grant can be combined with merit from the school or any other type of scholarship or grant available to a non-athlete, such as merit scholarship, a legacy grant, a sibling grant, a department merit or talent award IF the athlete meets all the requirements for that award. The athlete can accept federal or state need based aid (Pell grant, SEOG, state versions of these, work study), can take the Stafford loans or Perkins loans, can take other state aid or outside merit aid. Athletes can accept outside scholarships but if the scholarship is based on athletics, it is counted against the team total, so the coach has to approve accepting it.

Baseball has some unique accounting of scholarships because there is a minimum award and a maximum team size. There are people on the athletic recruit forum (see post #1) who know baseball recruiting.

My understanding is there’s a “bill” under review by NCAA that will allow Need Based funding (based on parents income) and athletic scholarship funds to be stacked allowing the althlete the opportunity to get closer to the full ride. Does anyone know more about this and where it stands on passing?

Haven’t heard that. Don’t base your decisions on something you heard might happen (the NCAA is not the fastest moving body and has been considering recruiting changes in some sports for years). If you are offered a scholarship, assume that is going to be the amount you receive. If you are Pell eligible, you’ll also get that. If you are in a conference that awards a stipend, you should get the corresponding percentage of the stipend (if you have a 25% scholarship, you should get 25% of the stipend).

You asked if you could get need based aid from the school and an athletic award. As of right now, you cannot.
