D3 "Recruiting"

Dizzy-husband is not from Texas, but frequently uses the 'cat-herding' analogy, which never fails to amuse. I actually heard a better one, from a North Carolinian, which will probably get asterisks applied to it when I post it, so I hope you can make sense of it: "I was as busy as a cat trying to cover crap on a marble floor." I don't know why, but the visual on that one has staying power.

Does the NCAA date vary from sport to sport? For my S, it was July 1 after junior year. It was like waiting for Santa to come. The strangest thing, waiting for phone calls from strangers...

Dizzy-husband had helped S put together e-mails to an A and B list of college coaches in the Spring with information pertinent to him as an athlete and a scholar, to help them place him on the map.

The other thing I would ask, though, is whether your D's club or school coach is helping. An experienced coach has contacts and can guide a talented athlete through the process and/or make a fortuituous introduction. My S's coach made several small but crucial moves of this nature when he learned that S was interested in the Ivies.

Also, is bball a sport where it helps to have a video? I know a young woman who is hoping to play a sport at one of the Claremont colleges, which you mentioned, who rather hurriedly had to throw together a video -- you probably already have a compendium of them if you're a true sports parent :-)

There were a couple good questions in there ...

Yes, the dates vary by sport and by division (I, II, or III) ... www.ncaa.org outlines the dates by each sport/division

I have read that they can ... and that they should NOT be a highlight reel but instead a continuous stretch of a game ... the coaches want to see if the player plays hard all the time, hustles on D, and does all the little things ... and this can only be seen on a longer stretch of film.

Be very careful about Booster Club and other such local awards. If your student is going to participate in varsity athletics, these cash awards need to be submitted directly to the college by the local association or club. If your student takes the cash award directly they may be in violation of NCAA rules. If they think that they may be receiving such an award have them check beforehand with the college AD or coach.
