D3 tryouts--fall sports

Sorry if this is sort of a dumb question, but are tryouts for D3 fall sports held after the freshman report for orientation? Or are they held earlier, and the student needs to report to campus early in order to try out? Obviously we will ask the specific coach once we know where DS is going, but I was just wondering in general. Sport is football.

Football will start before school starts, so the tryouts will be before that. Recruits will, of course, know before selecting that school.

So how does a non-recruited football player tryout then? Stay in a hotel before freshmen orientation starts?

Often the dorms open early for athletes, RAs and others who have to be there early. The coach should be able to help you navigate it all.

@Mwfan1921, thanks. I wasn’t sure if schools would be willing to let a student whose team participation hinged on the tryout move in early.

DS will be doing the school’s summer football camp, so we will ask the coach then, but we are trying to determine the feasibility and logistics of trying out at a D3 for football general. DD was a recruited athlete for a winter sport, so that timetable was more obvious. Her team’s tryouts were simply the first day of season in mid-Oct.

D3’s cannot fill their football squads with just recruited athletes. I am sure there is a process and a simple email to the coach would be a start.

My nephew plays at a small D3 in Texas. IIRC, they have a tryout day the first day of summer camp and then a larger one on the first day of spring ball. I never asked him, but I just assumed that the kids who show up in the summer have had some level of contact with the coach through the spring and summer.
