Hey! I’m attending the SGIS Direct admit day on April 2nd, and I just wanted to see if any past students could give a description of what takes place! Also generally, what should I wear? (Female) thanks!!
DD and I attended yesterday. Both of us thought it was a good program. Since they’ve hired a lot of faculty lately, the small class sizes that result are great considering how big IU is overall. Really liked the discussion with the academic and career advisors, they seem like a very professional group to assist SGIS students while at IU and in taking the big leap after college. We both got the feel that SGIS staff want to work with their students to try to achieve whatever goals the students want. IU and SGIS are now on DDs short list to decide this month, only thing holding her back is cost as we’re OOS.
My son is also a direct admit to the SGIS. We were not able to attend yesterday due to a family event, but we did go to the Red Carpet Day on Wednesday and arranged to spend some time at the SGIS then. We were also extremely impressed with the faculty that we met, all very welcoming and professional. I agree that the program appears to be a student-centered and supportive environment.
For my son, it’s between IU and UW-Madison. Although we all love the UW atmosphere, IU seems to be the stronger choice given his academic interests. The presence of the Turkish Language Flagship Program at IU is also a major factor.
IU has government-funded flagship language programs in Turkish, Chineses, and Swahili. These are a very comprehensive and effective way to learn a critical language and participants receive generous funding to study abroad, which can be helpful from a financial perspective. I recommend checking them out…
