We are having a hard time deciding between a MacBook Pro or Elitebook. Does anyone in industrial design have any opinions or information on them? Can you tell me which is preferred?

Most students get the macbook- however that’s due to most people preferring mac over pc (they’re just designed so much better…). You will have to install windows on your mac (available for $7 at the student store) once you become a sophomore, but performance-wise they feel nearly the same. Just pick whichever one feels better for you (your son/daughter) and make sure it’s something you’ll be happy with for 5 years.

Thanks Ineo! It seemed like most people at orientation were getting the Mac and he preferred the Mac, so that is the one we went with. I preferred the 3 year accidental protection on the PC that the Mac didn’t have, but he persuaded me to purchase the Mac for him.

I have another question for anyone in industrial design or DAAP. His brother has a laptop bookbag for his computer and when we went shopping for one, my son said he preferred a black rectangular laptop carrying case. I am concerned that carrying his laptop in that vs. a bookbag will make him more of a target for theives when walking on campus late at night. Do most people in DAAP carry their laptops in a bookbag or the other style of black rectangular laptop carrying case?

umm i never really thought about that- looking around the studio right now, most students have a backpack. It’s nice to have a little bit of space inside to carry stuff around- whether it be school work or art supplies, and I don’t think a laptop bag would be as good at that. Some students have messenger bags, but they are the larger kind.

And also- I would highly, highly recommend getting applecare- it will extend the warranty for 2 years, and apple has excellent service when you need it. I know it has saved more than a few students (myself included) when something went wrong.

When schlepping (oversized or delicate) project work to DAAP building, extra hands are needed. Backpack is preferred by most students

Thanks Ineo for giving this informative post, you have given right solution but macbook will be best for DAAP building.
