Dad as uni professor

My dad is a prof.at Columbia university, and I’m interested in applying their ED. Does this raise my chances, if so by how much?

Wouldn’t your dad be the best person to ask?

While I’ve never seen published information on the acceptance rate for faculty children at Columbia, as a result of the anti-asian bias lawsuit, there is information available for Harvard which “…accepted 46.7 percent of faculty and staff children…” who applied to the classes of 2014-2019.

H isn’t accepting kids solely for being faculty children. Nor will Columbia.

We know zip about OP.

He says he doesn’t know

My grades and ecs are pretty good, but prob. not columbia worthy. With ED+professor dad I hope to have a chance. I want to determine how much my dad’s job boosts my application

@apchemgang That would depend on your dad. Is he tenured? Is he an assistant, associate, or full professor? Does he have an endowed chair or brings in a lot of research grants. Is he in an administrative position? If he’s non tenured or an adjunct or a lecturer then it’s not really a hook. If he doesn’t know then he should be able to ask around as other faculty members have prob experienced children applying.

Is your dad an ‘officer’ of Columbia? There are some teaching positions which are not considered officers. The second thing to keep in mind is the length of time your dad has been employed by CU. He can find out by logging into CUBES. They take both of these into account when reviewing applications. There are other types of officer positions within CU: administration, libraries, research, etc. But the officers of instruction generally have the highest pecking order.

Officers kids do have a higher chance of acceptance, but I don’t know by exactly how much. Your best chance is to apply ED, as the officer benefit is lower in the RD round. If you are accepted, then you’ll be treated with a full tuition scholarship, which is a wonderful benefit. Even if you are not accepted, whatever college you matriculate at, Columbia will pay for 50% tuition.

I have additional information, which I’ll be happy to discuss via PM.

Yes tenured full prof.

He wrote a book but he is definitely not bringing in a lot of grants.

Yes I would like to discuss it over PM, Idk how to do that (more of a reddit person)

He is full tenured professor,

It’s not his tenure that magically tips you in. You need to be the right candidate. He can certainly have a convo with admissions. And you can explore what C looks for.

“Yes tenured full prof. He wrote a book but he is definitely not bringing in a lot of grants.”

Is he bringing in grants at all? If he is, then the threat of him taking the grants elsewhere could be important. As lookingforward mentioned, it would be good for him to talk with admissions and get you on their radar. In the old days a 1540/3.8/child of tenured prof would be admitted, but this is definitely not the good ole days, so the numbers form the Harvard case (about half get in) are probably more relevant. Good luck!
