Dad thinks I can get accepted on graphic design portfolio alone

My parents both went to universities but never pushed school very hard on me. As a result, I never took school very seriously and my grades suffered because of it (I was always more creative minded anyway).

Long story short, I dropped out my senior year (wouldve grad 2009) due to health problems and said I was going to finish at my local community college. I got 2 jobs doing graphic/web design and ended up not getting my High School Diploma until this summer. Once that was completed suddenly college became possible and realistic to me. I am 21.

In terms of graphic design I have designed over 100 fliers, magazine ads, posters, brochures, booklets, etc. I have stacks of printed stuff I've done sitting in my room.

I have also designed a large amount of websites, which is probably where my talent shines the most.

One job is at a record label and the other at a more corporate company that makes high end hotel furniture, so I have experienced both ends of the spectrum.

My dad is convinced if I met with the art department at a college that they would consider accepting me on my portfolio alone. I am skeptical of this... I have no idea how plausible it is or if colleges even look at graphic/web design for portfolios. The only examples I can find are hand drawn work, which is not something I do.

Any guidance would be very appreciated! I can post samples as well if that matters..

PS. I am looking at more general colleges (CSULB, IU, SJSU), not art colleges. Not my crowd..

An art school is more likely to I’ve heavy emphasis to your portfolio than a CSU.

It sounds like you’ve done quite well. What do you hope to get from college? Do you just want to study art or other things too? What is your budget for college?
