Damage to my acceptance chances?

Hello, I am currently a sophomore in high school. I attend one of the top 5 public schools in Michigan and want to go to the University of Michigan in the future. I remember hearing once that a UMICH rep came to our school and said that they love accepting kids from my school, with an acceptance rate of 75%. I know that since I'm only a sophomore I haven't taken the ACT yet so bear with me. I am generally a bright kid, taking one of the most difficult course lines you can possibly take at my school. I took honors English in 9th grade as my only challenging class, and my GPA was a 3.667 both semesters unweighted. This year, I am taking honors English, APUSH, and two science classes (chem and anatomy). For the curriculum at my school, this is pretty tough. I'm sure most of you realize it is finals time for high-schools in about a week, and I am very worried that I will get a C in chemistry because it is very challenging for me. This will put my GPA at a 3.45 weighted. Do I still have a chance of getting into UMICH if I pick up my grades next semester as well as next year and do well on the ACT, or will this GPA doom me for good? p.s- I also did JV wrestling last year and varsity wrestling this year along with the very prestigious medical competition club HOSA, and I currently have only 5 hours of volunteer work which I plan to increase working at a hospital next year and volunteering at a local fire station. Your responses are much appreciated, thanks!

Obviously-- UW GPA is the biggest factor for UM decisions. That being said, you’re only a sophomore. Focus on getting the best possible grades you can, and you’ll get the decision you deserve.

Upwards trends show tenacity, and a determination to succeed, but there needs to be a marked improvement. By the time you’re applying, you’ll ideally have a 3.7 UW gpa with at least a 32+ ACT score.

Volunteering and EC’s are good, but they should be secondary priorities to your grades. Junior year grades are most important. If you take tough classes and show UofM you can excel. I see no reason why they would deny you (provided you reach the basic benchmarks I mentioned before).

This isn’t a question you really need to ask here. Do you want people telling you that you have blown your chances? You know what you need to do – start working your butt off to get that GPA up.

How do all of these high schoolers on here know what their high school is ranked? Is it something these schools brag about a lot so the students know? My high school in Ohio was pretty good, excellent ratings and what not, but I don’t ever remember hearing our “ranking”.

^MME/ACT scores are released by the state of Michigan, and a de facto ranking based on those results scores can be determined that way.

Sorry but weighted GPA of 3.45 is too low for umich. You’ll really have to get it up!! You should be able to, after all you are “bright”. I would really try to get an UW GPA of at least a 3.7 to get into Umich…but that is still a little low. Just remember, a weighted GPA means nothing at Michigan.

“a weighted GPA means nothing at Michigan”

Not true at all. This is why it is dumb for high school students to chance other high school students…

While a weighted GPA may not be meaningless, even a high school student can tell you a 3.45 unweighted is going nowhere at Michigan.

What I was getting at was that Michigan doesn’t admit based off of a weighted GPA. They recalculate all GPAs to a 4.0 scale. Sorry ThisIsMichigan, but that means nothing to me! :)
