Dance Audition - So I'm not a Dancer (Clothes)

sports briefs can also work

tom - as the mother of a male dancer I would strongly suggest a dance belt or VERY snug fitting briefs IF you are wearing jazz pants. Jazz pants fit tightly to the body and it can be distacting to watch a male dancer if he is not "properly" supported. In an audition you don't want anything to distract from your dancing. You don't have to wear a ballet dance belt though, they have ones with "full" backs that work very well and are much more comfortable.

UPDATE!

So, no dance store in my city sells male jazz pants. (Go figure?) Or has them in stock.

Lululemon sells male yoga pants...Could these work?

This just gave me a good chuckle to wind down my day... dance belt??? I never knew there was such a thing and never really gave it any thought until this thread. Can you tell I have only daughters??

tom<3avenueq - Lululemon's male yoga pants are great, however these unfortunately don't go for $20.00 :( and may not be an option for everybody.

Here's another possibility:
Motionwear Men's Jazz Pant - MM7203

It also shows that fitted T shirt you have heard some of us talk about :).

While I am at it, here's what a dancebelt looks like (it may actually surprise you):

Men's Comfort Dance Belt - CA5933

teritwtt, I can tell you are not a fan of Christopher Guest's amazing mockumentary about community theater/musicals: Waiting for Guffman. At one point, the movie's protagonist, Corky St. Clair, remembers how he came to NYC the first time, "fresh off a destroyer with nothing but a dance belt and a tube of Chapstick." :)

For jazz pants you can also check out Discount Dance Supply ; Discount Dancewear, dance accessories, discount dance wear, dance clothes, dance apparel, pointe shoes, discount dance apparel, dance wear, dancewear, ballet shoes, dance shoes. Prices are good, and service is fast.

Our s. STILL wears gym shorts to his ballet classes as a freshman; he gave me all his "dance pants" after his acceptances were over and he made his choice.
Have you ever seen what real dancers wear over their funky socks and tights? They look like street waifs.

Yes, it seems to be a matter of pride among "real" dancers to wear a series of garments that look as if they have seen far better days. Tattered stuff.

mamalot - would you mind sharing what your son wore to his auditions?

I will say - I am involved with a professional ballet company -, most male (and female) dancers wear the funkiest outfits during warm ups (some even look like they are homeless). However, when they are actually working on combinations, most ballet masters I know require and expect the company members to "peel down" to tights and/or fitted clothing.

Mamalot! Please tell what your son wore, if he wore shorts, I will be pleased...but I did buy Jazz Pants and the haunting dance belt to go with it.

I don't recall ever seeing a male dancer's hairy legs. I would not recommend wearing shorts. Please wear the jazz pants! LOL

Now you get to see a man in skin tight pants :P It's lose lose!

Haha. Ha. This thread has loling.
There's no way now I can wear J pants. I think I have the JLO effect--body is mostly fine then the badonk sticks. FAR out. So, I might have to walk some more before auditions lol.

Has ME loling oops sorry for the error lol.
