Can anyone give me advice for what to be working on for the dance audition. I am more of an actress and singer, and I know that fsu is dance heavy, but it is my #1. Besides the obvious answer of taking more dance classes is there anything specific I should work on? (ex. double pirouettes…)

bdwaybaby,
The dance audition consists of a warm up, a ballet combination and a jazz combination.
I can't say there's a specific step or skill that you should work on. Just do your best and try to have fun with it. I think ballet technique would be the most helpful and yoga for strength and flexibility.
There will be people in the dance audition who have never taken a formal class as well as people who have been taking dance for well over 10 years. Our audition process is designed to allow all the candidates to show off their strengths - and this includes the dancers which is why the dance audition is a bit challenging. If you aren't the strongest dancer in the room just try to relax, enjoy yourself and do the best you can... and prepare to shine in the individual appointment when you do your monologue and songs.

Best wishes,
Michele

Thank you so much:)

So i have had some questions swimming in my mind about the dance audition for FSU.
How many people are in the room "judging" you? Are these the same people doing the second half of the audition?
I'm so nervous. I have been waiting 4 years for this one audition. I know Feb. 1 is right around the corner.
Another question. Do they try to accept an even number of men and women or is the gender not important. I'm a guy and i'm hoping that might give me an edge. The competition this year is extremely high.

How many people audition? And 12 get in correct?

There are 3 people "judging" you but there will be a bunch of the students in the room supporting the auditionees through demonstration and observation. It may seem intimidating with the amount of people watching you, but there are only three people that are deciding your future in the program--the rest are there to help in any way they can!

I keep bumping into you (Alfieism) on every website i go on. (It's the kid that keeps bothering you on youtube and facebook.) I'm just in desperate need of any and all information regarding this audition. Sad i know. I'm beginning to feel a bit pathetic to be completely honest. lol

Theatre Geek 15:
There are actually four of us and we are the same group morning and afternoon as well as all six of the audition days.
We actually do not look to balance by gender or type. We are looking for students who are a good fit for our educational environment. This is especially important in a small program.

Please try to relax and enjoy the audition. Students who really love what they do shine!

Bdwaybaby:
Our goal is for an incoming freshman class of 8-10 students. We will accept 12-14 with the hope that 8-10 will enroll. We also will have a short waiting list.

Do you know if anyone has ever got into the dance program at FSU if they don’t have much experience in ballet? No pointe experience. I am a sophomore at FSU and have taken 4 years of ballet classes my whole life, (including one my senior year high school and one in college) I have done cheer dance and performed in the nutcracker. I really love dance but I am not that experienced. I have never been on pointe, is it even an option for me to try to get into the dance school or are they looking for the best of the best?..if so how many girls usuallly audition for dance in January???

Thankyou

FSU has a very strong program in dance. If you are already a sophomore with not much dance experience I wonder why you would want to get into their dance school. Maybe they allow BA students to take classes in their department without being a part of the program…you should inquire directly through the school (particularly since you are already there.)

I realize that fsu is strongly dance concentrated, but I (like many others) have just recently discovered the joys music theater about 3 years ago now. So I haven’t had as much training as others might have, especially in dance. Is it possible that a student could be accepted not soley on techinique but for passion and that “spark” that often shows the potental to grow and learn what is neccessary for this major?

MBRMT,

FSU likes strong dancers but there are plenty of students in the program who are not. Everyone takes dance at their current level. Some are fabulous singers and have never had much dance. I think they are definitely looking for that spark and for someone who is trainable. Just shine! It’s a fabulous program and everyone is really super nice. Good luck!

Hello,
Karissa is absolutely right; dance is an adjudicated skill at the audition, but many of the students accepted over the years have not had a great deal of dance experience. The thing that is important is innate ability and the desire to grow as a dancer.

Take care,
Michele
