How much do dance auditions REALLY matter? Thinking back on my auditions, I could have done a whole lot better remembering what was taught and focusing more on technique. But dance is definitely my weakest, so I went in knowing I wouldn't be the best one. But I smiled and tried to be enthusiastic in every single dance call. If I'm super strong in the voice/acting area, will a school usually still consider a kid who couldn't remember half the routine in the dance call?

I think it depends on the school. Many of them say the dance audition is only for placement and not considered for admission. If you have two left feet it might make them think twice but it seems like most schools who place a lot of emphasis on dance say so up front.

I would say most programs that do include a dance audition do so because it is a component in the admission process. True, there are some programs that, as noted above, only include dance as a measure for placement. The bad news would be that MT is a triple threat world out there - especially for young performers. The great news is, at most programs, if you shine in two of three areas (acting, singing, dance) - they are usually willing to work with you on the third area in which you might be weaker. Best of luck on your journey.

I certainly agree that it depends on the different schools. I know that I’ve heard that here, it is important to be teachable in each area. I doubt a school would accept someone who is not capable, but rather someone who is willing to work hard. If you showed the schools what you’re capable of right now and that you can be taught, that is the best you can do! Best of luck with the waiting game! :)

In the auditions of my D last February, of the 7 schools, 1 did not have dance audition and we were told upfront, 1 required a prepared dance number performed during the individual audition and 5 had group dance audition where they were give routines to follow and perform. Of the 5, 1 had a dance audition for 1.5 hours for both ballet and jazz routines and the remaining 4 had 30-45 minutes of basic dance routines. I believe the dance audition would allow the evaluator to determine how you could follow instructions, your understanding of basic dance terminologies, your body movements and expression and your capability to learn. As to how important dance is for a school, I believe it would be determined as to how intensive the dance audition was. How it translates into acceptance, will see when all the results are in. Good luck.
