Hi, I an a junior in HS and am an aspiring dance major with a lot of questions!!!! I have been looking at university at buffalo, pace, and uarts(university of the arts) I was wondering of anyone has any information about the genres of dance at these schools. I am a competitive dancer and I have background in jazz, hip hop, tap, ballet, lyrical, and modern. But I really enjoy contemporary the most, it has become my passion these past couple years. I am still taking all the classes listed since I am a competitive dancer though! I also enjoy jazz and hip hop a lot as well. Also is there is any information about scholarships for these schools since I am out of state for all of these except elon.

Also is it possible to double major or minor in arts and entertainment management at any of these schools?!

I am quite familiar with UArts (Theater, more than Dance), and slightly familiar with Pace. If you plan to audition for BFA Dance programs, you will need to expand your list. As with Theater programs, it is not unheard of for students (especially those seeking financial aid and merit awards) to apply to 20 or more. The Dance major at UArts is Contemporary, although you will undoubtedly study other genres. The core curriculum is modern dance, though. Double majors at UArts are tricky, although I understand they are trying to revise the system to make it easier. There must be a thread for Dance majors on CC, but I can give you some insights from my family’s experience with admission to Theater programs. First, you should include some non-audition BA programs among your colleges. They should include academic and financial safeties. There are no “safe” auditioned BFA programs, only somewhat less-selective ones. Most conservatory-style BFA programs have rigid curricula and requirements, which make double majors quite tricky. Your core classes won’t be negotiable, and anything else has to be scheduled around them. If you are a good student, or test well, you might get some merit aid at UArts. The Dance program there is very good, and larger than some other departments. Is UNCSA out of reach for you? It would seem like an obvious choice for you, if you’re in-state.If you’re a good student, Fordham-Lincoln Center has a very exciting Dance major, taught in conjunction with the Alvin Ailey Company. Pace obviously has a brutal audition process for the “Commercial Dance” major; its Theater/Acting BFA audition requirements were about the most extreme that I saw when my son considered them. You will need to begin assembling an audition schedule and “battle plan” this year. Good luck!

I don’t know a lot about the programs you are interested in, but I’ll tell you what little i know. Hopefully you will be able to find some people on the Dance forum who have been through this process already!

Pace offers a BFA in Commercial Dance, so seems to have everyone taking a wide variety of dance styles as well as some theatre classes to prepare you for all facets of commercial dance and theatre dance. I know the audition requires several styles, including ballet, modern and tap. There might be more too! It is supposed to be a great program.

UArts - a friend of my S’s just started as a freshman in August and absolutely loves it! I know she takes a ton of ballet, jazz and modern, and i think you can pick one to specialize in your junior and senior years. They also offer a lot of different styles like hip hop and improv. S’s friend was a competition dancer too who was more contemporary focused (but also very good at hip hop, ballet and modern) and she is finding UArts a great fit. I think much of their focus is on the arts, so while you receive a BFA College Degree, I don’t think they focus a whole lot on academics. This was great for S’s friend, but a deal breaker for S, who is looking for more the whole college experience. Depends on what you are looking for.

I am afraid i don’t know anything about SUNY Buffalo.

S is going to audition at Elon on Nov. 7 so we should know more about that school then.

The best way to see if there are arts management or arts administration majors at any of these schools is to go to each individual school’s website and do a search.

Zebrarunner Awesome, thank you so much for the information! Does uncsa cover a variety of dance genres, I love ballet but it is not my main focus as much as contemp and jazz and other genres. Also I have look at university at buffalos website they seem to be contemporary but I can tell for sure have you heard of their dance program. Are there any other schools you would reccomend that offer great scholarships or on the east coast

@contempdancer welcome! My D is a senior in HS and is just now starting on her auditions. She is also a competition dancer, with extensive ballet training, but she considers herself a jazz dancer first. She is auditioning at Point Park this weekend and that’s another one you might want to look at. It’s in Pittsburgh and is another school that has classes in all three concentrations of jazz/ballet/modern. My D is auditioning for the jazz track. She is also auditioning at UArts and Pace as well. Another school that has been mentioned a lot is Shenandoah in Virginia. My D is auditioning there as well, I think from what I have heard it is a smaller program but also has a well rounded curriculum based in jazz/ballet/modern and even tap.

My D has a friend who is at Boston Conservatory as a freshman and loves it and seems to be taking classes in a lot of different disciplines as well.

Wow thank you so much for the information, I’d love to hear more about your daughter’s auditions and decisions! How is the tuition at the schools she is auditioning for? Do you know anything about university at Buffalo dance program? Thanks in advance nowmomto3

UNSCA has two tracks … Modern & Ballet. You must choose one or the other for your focus the two programs are somewhat separate from what I understand.

Ok thank you so much for the helpful information! Yes I’m not looking for a strong ballet. If you have any information about any schools that offer a variety of styles like jazz contemp hhop and others is love to hear about them! I am more contemp based but I would love to also take electives oiin other styles!!!
