Im going to UNLV and im not sure if i like it or not. Im a dance major. Dance is the only thing that i want to do. I like the professors and everything but Im not motivated. IM STILL A FRESHMAN. Do i stay for my 4 years to get my BFA... should i try a different school with a different dance department. Can i major in a certain style of dance? Any colleges for dance you recommend?

FWIW, here's 3 snippets I copied from someplace, probably elsewhere on CC. You might consider moving this thread to the "arts majors" subsection of the "College Majors" section of CC.

1) Dance
Barnard, Middlebury, Bowdoin, Colby, Reed, Skidmore, Sarah Lawrence, Hampshire, Haverford, Swarthmore, Case Western Reserve , Smith, muhlenberg , george washington, suny purchase, Williams , Vassar, Dartmouth, Bryn Mawr, Princeton , Oberlin, Bennington, Connecticut College Connecticut College,
Goucher, Washington University, St. Louis , Bates ,Bard ,Ithaca
Boston Conservatory - (very strong dance program - even though there is no dance audition)

Penn State
Florida State
University of the Arts
Oklahoma City University and Point Park College
University of Akron
Otterbein

2) The majority of college dance programs are ballet and/or modern based. That means that they favor one or both of these types of dance. They choreograph and perform either classical ballet or, more likely, very abstract and intellectual pieces. These programs are not focused on commercial dancing like jazz and tap. There are only a few programs that seem to prepare students for musical theatre dancing (jazz and tap) which is the foundation of almost all commercial work (i.e. money).

3) What schools did you find that provide ballet classes for serious ballet students (those who wish to continue but have no plans to dance professionally)?

These are the ones I have heard of OR I have checked the school web site and the course listing shows that significant classes are offered (for example, Amercan Univ, Geo Washington). Perhaps you can comment or mention others:

American University
Barnard
Dickinson (assuming you can handle classes at CPYB at the same time)
Duke
Eugene Lang (know they offer ballet, not sure if it is open to non-majors)
Fordham (program with Ailey, not sure if it is open to non-majors)
Geo Washington U
Goucher
Muhlenberg
Princeton (in association with Princeton Ballet School)
NYU (but Tisch classes are probably not open to non-majors?)
Smith
Tulane
Univ of Michigan

Julliard is all about dance

Both Princeton and Dartmouth were mentioned above, and while they have strong dance programs, neither offer a dance major.

Why are you a dance major? Do you want to dance professionally, go into another dance field (history, therapy, etc) or is it just an interest? What is your preferred style of dance? Most schools have a central focus. How well trained are you? Would you have a shot at a very competitive program like Julliard, or would you want something less hardcore? How are your academics? You wouldn't be able to transfer to many of the schools on monydad's list with poor grades and test scores. Do you care about where you go to school, the people you attend with or anything else besides the dance program? If you let me know, I should be able to help you out (I'm a dance major with a lot of dance major friends at different schools...).
