After becoming an expert on the admissions process for Musical Theater BFAs last year (our son will be going to Boston Conservatory), our daughter is now beginning the process for dance. She wants to double major in dance (plus either physical therapy, marketing, or human resources management). She has a GPA of just above 3.8 at a good private catholic school; her SATs are not stellar (around 1700). She dances 20+ hours per week with a college preparatory dance program (contemporary, ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop) that is the strongest program in our region (at their last dance competition / convention, every girl won a scholarship and they won the best dance of the weekend). She is not the best dancer of the senior girls; she is probably in the middle of the pack - depending on the style. For the past 3 years, she was also on her high school dance team, and she was an officer her junior year. She won't be on her high school dance team senior year, because there are too many conflicts with her dance company. Other ECs are limited - service (as required at her high school) and campus ministry. She has been dancing since age 3, and competing on a performing company team since age 7.

Many members from her performing company have gone to Loyola Marymount for dance, but one got into Juillard. Any suggestions of schools would be appreciated. While she's from California, she's open to any state, although she would prefer a metropolitan location. Also, she would prefer a mid-size school, and finances are not a challenge.

Saratoga - My D is at the end of her junior year and is looking at dance programs with options for double major in exercise science. We are looking at midwest/east schools and she would like a well rounded program, not just ballet/modern, and also would like a school that has a strong musical theater program that may have opportunities for dancers to audition.

Our list includes:
Pace
University at Buffalo
Muhlengerg
Ball State
Oklahoma City University
Chapman (the one West Coast school on our list)
Northwestern

If you are thinking of double majoring I would check with the various schools. Some schools either do not allow a dbl major - I don’t think OCU does or Point Park, or are not supportive. My DD attends Slippery Rock University and they are extremely supportive of a dbl major situation. My DD is an APA minor - Adaptive Physical Activity - and she is on track to get her Master’s by the time she is a senior. She would like to do dance with a focus on special needs individuals.

lammb66 you are correct that OCU does not allow a double major, but the strength of that program and the scholarship opportunities may overshadow that. With the AP credits she has going in and some careful planning she can always get her first degree and then finish another degree after that with minimal extra classes. So not a double major, but actually two degrees.
