My DD is a dance major but feels that MT dance is one of her stronger styles. She is trying to decide what she wants to do upon graduation. Her dream is to perform, cruise ship, dance company, Broadway, etc. However, she has absolutely no vocal training. Something I have encouraged for years but d/t being the stubborn young lady that I know and love, she has neglected that part of her training. She has instead focused on dance. I know many MT majors that have not focused on dance and so they are struggling with that piece. She however has not done any voice training. Is it too late for her to start? What would be the best way to go? I look with envy as I read the posts of MT parents and so wish she could have had the opportunity to do more MT training specifically but she was so involved in dance that she never did.

Which college does she attend?

It is not too late for her to start. I would suggest finding a voice teacher to work with one-on-one (one that works with musical theatre singers), and when she feels a little more confident about singing looking for a good musical theatre performance and/ or musical theatre audition class. Also, possibly working with a repertory coach to help choose appropriate audition rep.

Another (and/ or additional) route would be to do a musical theatre summer intensive… like at Cap21 or Circle in the Square.

Also – looking into taking an acting class would be a good idea.

Never too late. :-)

Is she in HS or graduating from College (your post says she is a “dance major”)?
