Dance Minor

Is there an audition process for a Dance Minor?

And what if a student decides to do a major in dance after they are already enrolled. Is there a possibility after enrollment to major in the dance field?

Thanks

I’m joining you in this thread. I’m thinking of taking a dance minor too.

Do we need to have a dance background to enroll in this minor? Or can basically anyone take it?

The dance minor is offered through Tisch Open Arts, not through the Dance department, so there is no audition process as far as I know. Anyone can take those classes.

If you want to major in dance, you have to audition and be admitted as a dance major. You can’t enroll as another major and “switch” to dance or double major in it, though if you’re admitted as a dance major you can double major in something else. If you transfer into the dance program, you start in the first year of the dance program, though academic credits might transfer.

Also, if I’m not mistaken, the dance program at Tisch is three years instead of four.

I wanted to edit my post because I re-read it and it’s not very clear, but basically, if you want to be a dance major you have to audition and be admitted to Tisch. You can’t enroll in, say, CAS, and double major in Dance, even if you pass the audition - you have to transfer to Tisch to do that.

@pelicuralitis Thank you for the information.

Btw, are there talent scholarships given once you audition for a major in dance? Are there any talent ones that can be applied to?

Thanks

There is definitely no audition. My D is pursuing this new option of a dance minor - she is a sophomore drama student at Tisch. She will use 14 of her elective credits to do the minor, the classes are all 2 points each - History of Dance, Choreography, Ballet, Contemporary, Indian Dance, Chinese Dance, and African Dance. We don’t anticipate this to be nearly as strenuous as a dance major, especially since she took 15 years of ballet and years of lyrical, jazz, hip hop, musical theatre dance…etc. It’s mainly just a way to stay in dance. Her first two years of studio have involved movement/contact improv but starting next year that may not be the case in advanced studio. Also, you don’t have to declare the minor until the very end, so if you start and don’t want to complete it, just use the credits as electives.

@helicoptermom24 I honestly have no idea, but I do not know of any talent scholarships given by Tisch or NYU. The Tisch website has an outside scholarship guide for external scholarships you can apply to: [Scholarship Guide: Tisch School of the Arts at NYU](<a href=“Student Affairs”>Student Affairs)

NYU gives talent scholarships for acting, music, film and art in Steinhardt and tisch. These are merit awards (no need.) Not sure about dance, but I would guess they do. Call the department to confirm.

Thanks for all the information

Tisch also gives merit scholarships for dance. They come with the acceptance packet. From the Tisch website:
Is is possible to minor in Dance?
The Tisch Dance department does not offer a minor in Dance.* Classes in our program are open to enrolled Dance majors only.

If there is a minor, which it seems there is, it is not through the dance department.

@quilll Where did you get that quote from?
On the contrary I found that Tisch does offer a minor in dance under special programs. here’s the link: [Minor in Dance: Tisch School of the Arts at NYU](<a href=“Special Programs”>Special Programs)

I think the confusion is that students who minor do so through the open arts program. They have their own classes that are seperate from the BFA dance students. The dance majors are not mixed in with the OA students. The OA students aren’t permitted to take dance classes through the BFA program. (Look at the requirements for each program and you will see that they have different call letters.)

It comes straight off the dance department’ FAQ. That was my point, if there’s a minor in dance, which it appears there is, it is not in the dance department itself.
